De La Hoya Loses, But Not Beat by Mayweather

The De La Hoya-Mayweather fight was hyped as the best of ‘this’ century… the best in a decade plus… and it lived up to the hype so long as you weren’t looking for a knock out. De La Hoya went all 12 rounds and didn’t look soft the entire time… something Mayweather’s corner seemed to be expecting. Oscar chased Floyd around the ring as Floyd seemed unwilling to go toe to toe. Floyd won the fight with a split decision that was based on the fact that his punches thrown to punches landed percentage was much higher than Oscar’s. Oscar was throwing almost twice the punches as Mayweather, who’s a great defender.

So, Mayweather wins… but did he BEAT De La Hoya… IMHO NO!! I think you should have to “take” the belt from the champion and although Mayweather fought very smart he didn’t “take” anything.

Oscar was trying to fight… give the fans their money’s worth and put on a show, win or lose go toe to toe. Mayweather was either banking on Oscar losing by points, waiting for Oscar to exhaust before attacking (which never happened), or was simply unable to get aggressive against Oscar and won the the fight based on his great defensive skills. Either way it’s on everyone’s minds and lips… “De La Hoya vs. Mayweather Rematch”

When it’s announced don’t forget that you can count on Ticket City for some great seats (perhaps next to some of the stars that were seen at the fight: J-Lo, Mark Anthony, Leo DiCaprio, Toby Maguire, Sen. John McCain, and more!)

  1. Agree that Floyd Mayweather was definitely moving away from Oscar De La Hoya a lot. But I think that has more to do with the slight size advantage that Oscar had on him. So I think there is no doubt that Mayweather won the fight.

Floyd landed more punches. He landed more power punches. He outboxed De La Hoya in the middle of the ring.

The only thing De La Hoya did better was act more aggressive on the ropes. But half of the time he was just swinging wildly at Pretty Boy Floyd and not landing in any punches.

So Mayweather won the fight. And I think the only reason it was a split decision was that Golden Boy Promotions was promoting the fight.

  3. I agree Oscar’s wild flurries weren’t hurting the pretty boy… but they were giving the crowd something to get excited about. And true that by the points it shouldn’t have even been a split… Floyd got the points… but Oscar wasn’t ‘beat’ he wasn’t hurting, he wasn’t exhausted… points don’t mean much to a person like me… One or two perfectly timed and executed punches can lead to a knock out… 100 points to 1 it doesn’t matter.

However, I will say Floyd has the ability to win very decisively against Oscar… he’s just got to be willing to attack… and not wait for something that doesn’t come.

    BRING ON THE REMATCH!!
