The Best of Week 1 in College Football

mccarron

We couldn’t wait for the first week of the college football season, so we’re already going to start talking about it like it’s this weekend. We’ve decided to rank the top 5 games of Week 1 that you don’t want to miss, starting in Nashville..

5. Ole Miss @ Vanderbilt

Both football teams look to have bright futures and this game could set the tone for the rest of the season, and perhaps a shot at a division title in the vaunted SEC. Ole Miss and QB Bo Wallace are aiming high, as are James Franklin and his Dores as we kick off SEC action early in the season in Tennessee.

4. Mississippi State vs. Oklahoma State

The Texas Kickoff Classic at Reliant Stadium in Houston brings together the Cowboys and Bulldogs in a season where Oklahoma State will likely be ranked in the top 15 in the country before kickoff. Hopes are high in Stillwater, while Mississippi State looks to rebound after finishing the 2012 season losing five of its last six after starting the season 7-0.

3. Alabama vs. Virginia Tech

Lots of people might have had this #1, but Bama is favored so heavily that I couldn’t put it above the next two. Played in Atlanta, both teams will have a lot of their fans in attendance and if V-Tech can upset Alabama in Week 1, we’ll see a power shift early on in the season.

Dabo Swinney looks to take his Tigers to the next level in 2013.

2. LSU vs. TCU

A huge game in AT&T Stadium in Arlington is on tap for the Tigers and Horned Frogs, with both having big aspirations for the 2013 season. TCU is bringing back a lot of starters to a team that lost on a 47-yard field goal to Michigan State in the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl.  LSU is looking to take back that SEC crown. This game will be a big stage-setter in two conferences.

 1. Georgia vs. Clemson

This is the big one of week 1, and it really isn’t even close. Taj Boyd vs. Aaron Murray, Dabo Swinney vs. Mark Richt, and everything else that comes with two of the biggest programs in the southeast. In SI’s post-spring football rankings, they had Clemson at #10. Georgia was #11. Clemson has the edge playing at home, of course, but few remember Georgia was one play away from going to the National Championship last season. If there’s one game you want to see in week 1, this is it.
