For any fan of golf, there is no experience quite like stepping out onto the pristine fairways at Augusta National to watch The Masters.  When you are there in-person, everything about the course seems magical.  The grass is greener and softer than any you’ve ever seen.  The rough is sculpted so perfectly that it seems like a work of art.  The greens are more treacherous and undulating than any you’ve ever played.  The whole experience for a golfer is one that you’ll never forget.  I’ve been twice and cherish the memories I brought back each time.

Yesterday it was announced that after knee surgery and the arrival of his new son, Charlie Axel, on February 8th, Tiger Woods will make his return to the PGA Tour next week at the Accenture Match Play Championship in Arizona.  Clearly this was big news and fans were excited.  The Tour was excited.  But what did the players think?

I thought the other Tour players might be a bit deflated that the phenom would be coming back to dominate and steal the scene once again.  Nope. 

Thought they might be a little let down knowing that their chances to come out on top in tournament play just got slimmer.  Not even.  (I know there’s the knee, but come on, it’s Tiger. ) 

Certinaly thought they would be a little irked at all the attention the Tour and the Accenture Match Play Championship would get now that Tiger’s back, yet they’d been there all along.  Not a chance. 

What did the players think and openly express?  That the Tour is cooler with Tiger.  That the Tour hurts without him. That Tiger’s return is some really good news in this crappy economy. 

Next week will certainly be something to see, for the Tour players and the fans.  In an online survey by Newsvine, 41% of fans (at time of posting) are already betting he’ll win the event.  So golf fans, get your tickets for this year’s tournaments now while they can be still be found.  Hmmm, maybe Tiger can single-handedly pump a little life back into this economy…

The second “Tiger-less” major of the golf season starts next week and the buzz around the PGA Championship isn’t much louder than a regular PGA tour golf tournament.  The 2008 PGA Championship is being played at historic Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.  The suburban Detroit golf course will be packed with golf fans for the tournament, but the demand for tickets is way off where it would if one Mr. Eldrick “Tiger” Woods was in the field.

Did you watch the exciting action on Sunday at the 2008 US Open?  Rocco Mediate, Lee Westwood and an injured Tiger Woods battled against Torrey Pines to try to win the US Open. Mediate overtook Woods early and was the first to post one under (-1).  Westwoodand Woods both came to the 18th hole needing an Eagle to win or a Birdie to force a playoffs; Westwood missed his birdie putt and Tiger nailed his birdie putt.  The putt by Woods forces an 18-hole playoff between he and Rocco on Monday at Torrey Pines.  The winner of that 18-hole playoff will be crowned the 2008 US Open Champion.

2008 was another fun year at Augusta National as the 72nd Masters finished with major newcomer Trevor Immelman leading wire to wire and donning the coveted green jacket. Tiger Woods couldn’t get his putter going and fizzled out down the stretch to finish 3 strokes back of Immelman. Tiger secured his second runner-up finish in two years.

TicketCity clients and Masters fans alike saw near perfect weather the entire week with minimal play delays due to some early morning fog and frost. The players field saw tough course conditions as the heat and wind played a major factor.
