The countdown has a healthy golden glow about it this week, pregnant with possibilities… and cups. The CONCACAF finals are this weekend at Solider Field in Chicago, pitting the plucky United States team against the towering might of… Panama. Well, as spec scripts go, this one might be a tough sell, but I’m sure the action on the field will great.

Sadly the lads from 1D didn’t get any boost from the royal baby news, and fell before the might of the Gold Cup. To second place, so it’s not all that bad, I suppose. Bieber didn’t seem all that troubled by the shake-up at the top, but Beyoncé had to make some room.

This week’s new entries to the countdown arrive at the very (very) end. (Non-Association) Football season steadily approaches, and this week the Texans volunteer for the reminder.

A rare countdown newcomer lands at #10, but one hardly unfamiliar to metal fans the world over. Black Sabbath reunites for a world tour, fronted by the band’s most famous “alumni,” Ozzy Osbourne. Sabbath returns not only for the reunion tour, but a new album, 13. The album is Sabbath’s first studio effort since 1995, and the first since 1978 with Ozzy on vocals. To sum it all up for the fans of heavy metal: this is probably something you don’t want to miss.

Considering the occasion, here’s some classic Black Sabbath, in a prime example of what music videos were like in the early 1970s. Do not be alarmed by the lack of camera movement and shots that go on in excess of two seconds. Feel free to be slightly alarmed by the hairstyles, though.

9 - WWE
10 7 Justin Timberlake

Some musical chairs this week at the top. 1D keeps the streak going, but the Biebs and Beyoncé trade places as Mrs. Carter’s Tour keeps going strong. Luke Bryan wisely stays out of it, content to hold down the number four spot, while the week’s biggest wild card drops in on the fifth spot.

The western hemisphere’s entry in the category of longest pro sports league acronym, CONCACAF, is nearing the culmination of is biennial Gold Cup championship. The Spanish-speaking of its many fans may know it as the Copa de Oro. The final is booked at Soldier Field in Chicago on the 28th, ample time to get tickets for the big show.

The Gold Cup’s sudden success did delay Taylor Swift’s charge for the top. She’s joined by someone also familiar with the neighborhood and looking for a comeback, Bruno Mars. Lil Wayne’s momentum stalled and he drops two spots, landing just above the wrestling ring. The WWE usually pops in this time of year in the run up to the Summerslam PPV.

Here is Bruno in his latest video, providing flashbacks to the sort of video effects I probably thought were cool in the early 80s.

Oh, and don’t forget to comment on how I’m wrong about CONCACAF being the longest pro sports league acronym in the western hemisphere. This is the internet, after all.

10 - John Mayer

Reunion of sorts in the top five, with 1D, Bieber, Beyoncé and Taylor Swift all back. Swift has been out of play recently, but there is certainly no shortage of concert dates left in the Red Tour. It won’t wrap up until the end of the September.

The bottom five is a mix of returning favorites, starting with Lily Wayne. Wayne is headlining the America’s Most Wanted tour, with TI and, date depending, either 2 Chainz or Tyga. The tour lasts through the end of August.

Phish is back once more. They too will be busy until the end of August, playing multi-day mini-festivals at amphitheaters and pavilions around the US.

The week’s one sporting event is the Cowboys. The NFL preseason is just a few weeks away and excitement builds steadily. College is right behind. Noticed a few of the usual college suspects making their way up towards the top 10 this week.

I sense it’s probably not the greatest idea to go with a Lil Wayne vid, and no one has time to make it through an hour and half Phish jam, so I’ll use this space to welcome back Jon Mayer to the countdown with a video of him providing tips on how to look like Carlos Santana.

10 - Toby Keith

One Direction’s streak continues with another solid win. No one has posed much of a threat to them, and this week is no different. They racked up twice the clicks as their nearest competitor, the resurgent Mr. Bieber. He doesn’t have too much to complain about, after months in exile in the bottom five, top three results are a refreshing change of pace.

Landing with a big smash, Wimbledon takes third. The Championships got underway earlier this week with some huge upsets. Two time Wimbledon champ and favorite Rafael Nadal lost in the opening round, and defending champ Roger Federer lost in the second round. Local boy Andy Murray is probably liking his odds right about now.

In other smashing news, Floyd Mayweather rounds out the top five thanks to his upcoming bout with Canelo Alvarez. The event is hot, so waiting until September to look for tickets isn’t advised.

After the shake-up at the top, Bruno and Luke end up in the bottom five, where Drake remains, and the College World Series signs off. The UCLA Bruins swept Mississippi State in the final two games for their first CWS win.

To celebrate the Bruins’ win, here’s that song about baseball you’ve all heard before:

9 - SF Giants
10 9 Texas Rangers

After months of third or fourth place, One Direction is not giving up the top spot easily. Bruno is making his play, with a big gain from #7 to land in the #2 spot. Finally, the esteemed Mr. Bieber’s luck is returning, finding himself in the top 3 for the first time in quite a while.

Unfortunately for Luke Bryan, he’s the one who had to make that room. Beyoncé, no stranger to the top herself, gains some momentum to land at #5.

Deep in the heart of it, the College World Series drops to #6. After this weekend’s games, the CWS heads into the home stretch, with the final games on the 24th, 25th, and if needed, the 26th. With a number of the favorites like LSU eliminated early, the finals will be chosen from UCLA, North Carolina, Mississippi State, and Oregon State.

Drake and his recent tour announcement lands at #7 this week. Fresh off a Grammy win, with a new album ready, he’s heading out on the “Would You Like A Tour?” Tour this fall. Judging by these numbers, the answer to that question, is “yes.”

Just put up a Drake vid in the last post, so I’ll be picking a wild card this week. Taylor Swift showed some positive movement, so let’s celebrate with the latest single, which I think is the one where she breaks up with Ed Sheeran:
