One Direction’s streak continues with another solid win. No one has posed much of a threat to them, and this week is no different. They racked up twice the clicks as their nearest competitor, the resurgent Mr. Bieber. He doesn’t have too much to complain about, after months in exile in the bottom five, top three results are a refreshing change of pace.

Landing with a big smash, Wimbledon takes third. The Championships got underway earlier this week with some huge upsets. Two time Wimbledon champ and favorite Rafael Nadal lost in the opening round, and defending champ Roger Federer lost in the second round. Local boy Andy Murray is probably liking his odds right about now.

In other smashing news, Floyd Mayweather rounds out the top five thanks to his upcoming bout with Canelo Alvarez. The event is hot, so waiting until September to look for tickets isn’t advised.

After the shake-up at the top, Bruno and Luke end up in the bottom five, where Drake remains, and the College World Series signs off. The UCLA Bruins swept Mississippi State in the final two games for their first CWS win.

To celebrate the Bruins’ win, here’s that song about baseball you’ve all heard before:

After months of third or fourth place, One Direction is not giving up the top spot easily. Bruno is making his play, with a big gain from #7 to land in the #2 spot. Finally, the esteemed Mr. Bieber’s luck is returning, finding himself in the top 3 for the first time in quite a while.

Unfortunately for Luke Bryan, he’s the one who had to make that room. Beyoncé, no stranger to the top herself, gains some momentum to land at #5.

Deep in the heart of it, the College World Series drops to #6. After this weekend’s games, the CWS heads into the home stretch, with the final games on the 24th, 25th, and if needed, the 26th. With a number of the favorites like LSU eliminated early, the finals will be chosen from UCLA, North Carolina, Mississippi State, and Oregon State.

Drake and his recent tour announcement lands at #7 this week. Fresh off a Grammy win, with a new album ready, he’s heading out on the “Would You Like A Tour?” Tour this fall. Judging by these numbers, the answer to that question, is “yes.”

Just put up a Drake vid in the last post, so I’ll be picking a wild card this week. Taylor Swift showed some positive movement, so let’s celebrate with the latest single, which I think is the one where she breaks up with Ed Sheeran:

10 - Taylor Swift

1D patiently bided their time before finally returning to the top of the countdown. Their ascendancy is somewhat bittersweet, since the former champ, Mumford & Sons had to take an unexpected hiatus due to a medical condition affecting bassist Ted Dwane. Their remaining US tour dates in June have been cancelled, and they won’t make Bonnaroo, replaced by Jack Johnson in the Saturday headliner slot.

Currently the group plans to return at the Glastonbury Festival.

Luke Bryan settles into the third spot, and the rest of the top five checks in with some championship sports. The Spurs aren’t letting the Heat sweep, and the CWS is just about to start. The first game is this weekend, and almost two weeks of the best in college baseball follows at TD Ameritrade Park.

Bieber manages to hold onto the sixth spot, currently his best performance in weeks. Bruno Mars has a bit of a surge, up from last place. Beyoncé moves in the opposite direction, ending down at #8, while Taylor Swift takes over last place from Bruno.

So, since I posted Mumford & Sons last week, this is going to have to happen. I’m sure by now you’ve jammed out to “What Makes You Beautiful”, so here is a different song by One Direction, one I’m old by Wikipedia was very popular in New Zealand:

9 - College World Series
10 10 Bruno Mars

This week welcomes a lot of returning faces and a single shuffle in the top 3. On the strength of some last-minute searches, George Strait still managed to land the #4 spot, but it’s Mumford & Sons that replace him at the top. This is the English folk rock quartet’s first time at #1. Their show this weekend at the Austin360 Amphitheater is probably helping out a bit there.

Five other guys from the same archipelago hang tight in second place, as does Luke Bryan, who remains in third. Rounding out the top five is Beyoncé, who will be reaching our shores later this month. Buzz for her tour has been pretty solid for months now, so it should be a strong contender for top three once it actually kicks off.

Justin Beiber makes his best showing in a while, climbing up to the sixth spot. The Spurs, who had to wait a little longer than most expected to figure out who they’d be facing in the NBA Finals, follow the Beebs. The (eventual) results were as most expected, so will the Spurs be up to denying LeBron another championship?

The other sporting event on the countdown this week is the College World Series, which begins June 15th at the now only relatively new TD Ameritrade Park. The contest for the top prize in college baseball lasts through the rest of the month, ending on the 25th or 26th.

Here’s the week’s #1 with “I Will Wait.” I like “Little Lion Man” better, but it’s got a dirty word in the chorus. To quote one Ralph Parker, “THE word, the big one, the queen-mother of dirty words…”

10 - Van Halen

It would seem the Beliebers have given up. I confess to a bit of disappointment, as a solid battle for the top spot makes things a bit more interesting. On the other hand, there was a surprise #2 this week, so the war for pop supremacy can take a break. Dave Chappelle’s unexpected mid-week show in Austin catapulted him to second place on the strength of a very short window of searches. That show ended up in a bit of headline-making controversy.

Coldplay and the Texas Rangers round out the top 5. Coldplay sat at #4 for three weeks running, an interesting feat. The rock vets are booked solid through August, so lots of opportunity to catch them as the make the North American rounds.

The College World Series falls three spots to #6. The CWS will wrap up early next week, depending on how the games shake out. The double elimination system makes for pretty interesting brackets. Jason Aldean hangs onto the #7 spot and the Heat fall to #8. The Heat did manage to capture the title, ending the series in a dominant 4-1 performance.

Katy Perry returns to the countdown after missing a week, though she has not released any new concert dates. I remain convinced the interest it due to her upcoming theatrical release Katy Perry: Part of Me, in 3D, no less. Again, not selling tickets to that, but I’m not adverse to having to look up Katy Perry each week to find out what she’s up to.
