Boy band battle for countdown supremacy! Aussie upstarts 5 Seconds of Summer have stormed the top of the countdown after only two weeks, while current favorites 1D roar back from sixth place to land at second. For nickname parity, I’m going with: 5SoS. 5SoS’s tour is a short one compared to the upcoming 1D globe trot, so we’ll see what kind of staying power they have. If nothing else, I suspect I will be typing 5SoS a lot in the coming months. Hooray?

Miley holds down third, and the WWE returns to forth, while the Houston Rodeo re-emerges at fifth. The latter will be starting next week, so be sure to get your tickets soon. Luke Bryan, currently in sixth place, will be stopping by the Houston Rodeo as well.

Billy Joel returns this week, while last week’s top performers have fallen rather far. Tool does the not-so-coveted 1-to-10 flip, while Bruno Mars falls from third to ninth.

As soon as I saw it, I knew I had to post the new Katy Perry vid, so good thing she hung onto the countdown this week. It’s not the four different styles of Egyptian eyeliner, or the light-up headdress, or the Pomeranian cameo, or the five seconds of digital serpents someone spent tons of money to animate and composite.

No, it’s just so I can describe the video thusly: this is one where Katy Perry kills people:

Well, Tool fans represent. This one I didn’t expect, and it certainly changed up the landscape a bit. Changing it even more is 5 Seconds of Summer, who, for the moment at least, Wikipedia describes as a pop punk band from Australia. As Wikipedia music genre edit wars go, this one is pretty tame so far. If these boys become more famous, expect it to heat up. Nothing like indulging in a bit of schadenfreude watching music nerds argue tirelessly about mundane trivia.

The changes at the top throw Bruno down to third place, from which he finally dislodged One Direction. Since I talked about their 3rd place streak last week, I jinxed it for them. Sorry, guys. Miley Cyrus returns to fill the gap between them, as the first shows of her Bangerz Tour have begun, with the accompanying flurry of tongue-focused press coverage.

The bottom five finds a lot of juggling from last week, along with another new face on the countdown. Lana Del Rey hasn’t announced any new tour dates, but she will be live around the West Coast for a few shows in April. She did announce a new album entitled Ultra-Violence, a term I am primarily familiar with as a difficulty mode in the original Doom. And, yes, I beat the game on said difficulty level, thank you very much.

Because it’s more amusing this way, I present proto-Lana. See, Lana’s real name is Elizabeth Grant, and she released her first music under the name Lizzy Grant. This is 2008′s “Kill Kill” from the EP of the same name. After perusing the channel this is from, it appears this one is much like the rest of her early efforts, 80% stock footage and 20% shots of her singing. No doubt economical for the artist just starting out. Doesn’t seem like the style changed over the years. I could be accused of liking some slow, down-tempo stuff, but even I find her to be the musical equivalent of NyQuil.

The Week in TicketCity Search – Imagine You Ranked Better than Nine

10 - Luke Bryan

The Man from Mars remains on top this week. The WWE climbs into second place, but they can’t seem to make to the top rope. What is the most mildly amusing of all is One Direction’s extension of their reign in 3rd place. An odd achievement, but I suppose it’s better than holding onto 10th place. Tune in next week to see if they can remain in 3rd place!

Hmmm, not quite the dramatic tension I was hoping for…

Tool makes another appearance after a long absence. The alt metal rockers have new tour dates this March. Fans eagerly await a promised new album, but despite rumors over a year old, there’s only fresh rumors due to the tour at this point. They’re known for putting on great live shows, so this is one that should attract more attention as the first date draws near.

Billy Joel rounds out the top five with a two point jump. Katy Perry ends up in the bottom five after a three point loss. The Yankees reappear, not only because Spring Training is a couple of weeks off, but thanks to the recent news of Derek Jeter’s retirement this season. Expect the already high Yankees ticket prices to go even higher.

Imagine Dragons did pop up a while back, when I posted the epic vid for “Radioactive.” Since I can’t use that again (it’s a rule, trust me, I made it), here is the video for their latest single “Demons.” The song is decent, but the video is basically live concert footage inter-cut with the human version of one of those Sarah McLachlan ASPCA ads. Suffice to say, my heartstrings are heavily resentful of attempted pluckification.

Halcyon North American Days

Ellie Goulding’s Halcyon Days Tour kicked off last fall, but she’s been crisscrossing the globe ever since. This spring she’ll be stretching her running legs in North America with 26 shows. Elena Jane’s mix of folk and electronica will first be heard in The Garden on March 12th. Okay, it’s not “The Garden” The Garden, but still, the Theatre is not a bad gig.

She’ll be in central Texas later in March, including a show at the Austin Music Hall on the 22nd. Shows in Houston and Dallas follow the Austin gig. She’ll be in the States through her May 8th show in Cincinnati before heading north for two final Canadian shows in Ontario. After that, it’s a long plane ride to Australia for her, and you, too, if you want to see her in concert after that.

Well, finally someone I don’t have to work too hard to find a suitable video for. This is “Goodness Gracious,” the latest single from Halcyon Days. Simple “friends night out” in SolCal sorta vid, with various wholesome activities performed, some including self illuminated footwear. I also think this is a really great song, but don’t let that get out on the Internet or anything.

Bruno Mars returns big this week, winning over the very event that gave him something of a bump. Fresh off the Super Bowl halftime show, the second leg of the Moonshine Jungle Tour is red hot. He didn’t even get paid for that gig (which wasn’t a big deal, no one ever does). Those last-minute Super Bowl searches last week weren’t able to secure the top spot from its very own halftime star. Yet again in 3rd, One Direction bides their time.

Katy slips to #4 thanks to the run on Bruno, and Mötley Crüe rounds out the top 5. They’re hitting the countdown for what promises to the last time, at least if you believe the press releases. Mötley Crüe embarks on “The Final Tour” this summer, after which they will officially retire. Forever. Or at least as long as they can make a living from solo projects. Their umlauts will be retired in a separate ceremony.

The WWE slips to #6, while one William Martin Joel returns to #7 this week. His spring touring dates are the most he’s done in quite some time. Once they’re done, Joel fans will have the opportunity to see him once a month at Madison Square Garden “indefinitely”. Kind of like a Vegas residency, just not in Vegas, and with a lot fewer shows, and possibly in a way that suggests his entire career up to that point is not a setup for the punchline that is “Vegas Residency.”

Rounding out the top ten are three dudes in cowboy hats.

Tough week for a video. Just posted Bruno, and I think I’ve already found the least-objectionable Mötley Crüe video and posted it with the tour announcement. So more Joel on tap. How ’bout getting your Friday off to hi-energy start with “Piano Man”!
