We’ll pretend I wasn’t off last week, though honestly, I ran the numbers and I wouldn’t be saying anything different about the #1 spot. Yes, the summer of 1D continues unabated. Can pretty much see the proverbial touch being passed from the esteemed Mr. Bieber, who once again comes up far short of a win. Such is the way of things, and it’s a nice torch while you have it, but eventually even One Direction will be handing it over to the next bunch. Oh, and if you know who that’s going to be, let us know.

Jason Aldean lands the #3 spot. Aldean’s a regular, though rarely cracks the top five when he does appear. He’s had a strong few weeks on the countdown. It will be interesting to see if he makes it up to #2. Real Madrid slips into the spot he departed, on the strength of a four spot climb. The international soccer club’s US tour is the strongest I ever recall for any big European team.

Rounding out the top five is the faint but ever growing rumble of college football season. The Longhorns, a common sight on the countdown in the fall months, arrive fairly early this year, bracketing the Cowboys with another college team, the Bulldogs of Mississippi State. Need to be clear about any team named “Bulldogs.” Seriously, have you seen how many there are?

Concerts round us out, starting with Madonna, whose MDNA tour is legging through Europe at the moment, but returns stateside in August. The Teen Choice Awards enter at #9. Doesn’t look like One Direction is on the bill at the moment, but something tells me there’s some bookers working overtime to make sure they show up. Carly Rae Jepsen is going to be there, maybe she can give them a call…

Looks like this will be the summer of One Direction. Fans of the esteemed Mr. Bieber have not mounted a serious challenge to the Brit boy band’s dominance since dates for the Believe Tour arrived. The addition of newly minted pop star Carly Rae Jepsen as the Beeb’s opening act hasn’t made a dent in One Direction’s numbers. Wikipedia suggests Carly Rae wasn’t plucked from complete obscurity, as she placed 3rd on season 5 of Canadian Idol before incubating a few years prior to the success of “Call Me Maybe.”

Other fun facts Wikipedia will tell you is that Marie-Antoinette probably never said this.

Coldplay moves up a notch, Jason Aldean gains three of them, and the Rangers just hang out, finishing the top five in the same spot as last week. While all of the top five were holdovers from last week, the bottom five is completely fresh. Well, Phish may have an odd smell about them…

Two things about summer in Texas, it’s hot and it’s when Cowboys’ fans brim with optimism. The Boys open up the bottom five this week, as the NFL season gets steadily closer. The Aerosmith/Cheap Trick Global Warming tour lands at #7 this week.

Fans of international soccer are looking to see Real Madrid as they play a variety of dates around the US in August. They’ll be in LA, Vegas, and New York as well as other big stadiums around the US, playing the LA Galaxy, AC Milan, and other big teams.

9 9 Jason Aldean
10 - Dallas Cowboys

BOOM! That was not pretty. One Direction, having held the top spot lo these many weeks, was de-throned by a margin that makes their previously impressive victories seem a mere trifle. The esteemed Mr. Bieber separated #1 and #2 by a nearly 5x margin, possibly setting a record for the number of searches in a week. My biggest concern now is that “Bieber” is not exactly a font of snappy title puns. While I was worried I’d run out with One Direction, I should have been concerned with who would replace them.

In the world outside of tween pop, we have Euro Cup hitting the #3 spot, which may be as high as the 2012 edition will be allowed to climb. Coldplay drops in at #4. They will be playing dates in Texas later this month and the smart money says that has something to do with their new-found chart success. The Thunder clenching a berth in the NBA Finals helped propel them to #5 in a bit of a “last minute” rush.

Kenny Chesney, no stranger to the countdown, returns to start the bottom five this week. He’s followed by someone who is a stranger to the countdown, Katy Perry. It seems as if her buzz may be due more to the upcoming release of a bio/concert film: Part of Me. As this one is going to be hitting your local multiplex, we won’t be selling tickets for it. She has said there’s a new album on the way, so no doubt Ms. Perry will be on the road again at some point in the future.

The Heat and the Celtics made a go of it, but seems Heat fans are the more optimistic this week. The NBA Finals match up will be set Saturday night on the Heat’s home turf. Speaking of optimism, the Dallas Cowboys peek in a the bottom of the countdown to bring things to a close this week.

10 - New York Yankees

Protip: the kids like the One Direction. They also like the Justin Bieber, just not quite as many of them at this point, it would seem. Mr. Bieber still has no concerts scheduled, while One Direction recently announced the follow-up to the tour they haven’t finished yet. The “2013 World Tour” will kick off less than 3 months after the “Up All Night Tour” ends in December of 2012.

The Derby and Oaks hang onto the #3 spot, keeping the top of the countdown the same this week. Things get mixed up pretty quickly after that. Garth Brooks returns as interest in his headlining gig at the Calgary Stampede lands him in the #4 spot. Jimmy Buffet is swinging by ACL Live at the Moody Theatre next month, and that’s probably why he appeared at #5 this week.

The bottom five reminds us that the NFL has returned at a slightly more normal time this season. You may recall last year the season almost didn’t happen, but this year the schedules have been posted and you can stock up on your favorite NFL team’s tickets a solid 4 months in advance of the preseason. The boys of summer aren’t left out either, as the Rangers hold steady at #8 and the Yankees peak in at #10 this week.
