Fans Of All Ages See Elton John in Austin

Now I’ll be honest, I’m not sure if I would have gone to Elton John if a friend hadn’t asked about going first.  But that did get me thinking about just how many hits the legendary piano man has.  I think I forgot just how many.  As it turned out, we ended up with a great group of friends going, and we saw even more at the show.  Sir Elton John packed the house at the Frank Erwin Center in Austin on Saturday night, and I was reminded just how many generations he has reached by the broad age range of fans in attendance.

The show started out solid, yet a tad subdued prior to the show really ramping up.  The legend played for a solid three hours and got up from his piano bench to have some fun with the crowd between songs.  Unlike many artists these days, Elton also signed autographs near the end of the concert for many fans.  So it wasn’t long before everyone was on their feet.  We were also introduced to Rich, a fan who EJ recognized seeing at a lot of his shows.  Rick told him he had been to more than 100-or-some-odd shows.  Now that is what I call a fan, and that made me think, exactly how old is Elton John these days?  The answer is the ripe ol age of 63 and he’s still putting on a damn good show.

Here are just a few songs from the set list in the event that, like me, you forgot just how many great hits Elton John has.  Looking for tickets to an upcoming Elton John concert?  Just click here to see available seating options.  Elton John’s tour is continuing throughout the Midwest and Northeast in the upcoming months.

The Week in TicketCity Search – April 9th

The esteemed Mr. Bieber is a monster this week, topping the chart by a wide margin. His summer tour is shaping up to be a blockbuster. Lady Gaga isn’t slowing down either, though at the moment she is across The Pond playing dates in Berlin, Paris, and London before returning stateside in July. Making a strong return to the countdown at #3 is Phish, who have their own summer tour mapped out.

Sir Elton John climbs to #4 this week, perhaps on the strength of his local show at the Erwin Center tomorrow, April 10th. Still time to grab tickets to this event. His tour rolls on through the rest of the month before starting back up again in July.

The Masters rounds out the top 5, as Tiger’s return remains at the top of the news cycle. Following golf’s most prestigious event is Taylor Swift, who climbs a bit after her fall to #10 last week. George Strait and Drake make an interesting combo following her, and the WWE is always at home in the 8-10 range it seems.

Finally, fans are shopping early for the chance to see college baseball’s finest go through the twists and turns of the College World Series double elimination tournament. The CWS isn’t until late June, but it’s never too early to plan your trip to Rosenblatt Stadium to watch the action.

1 1 Justin Bieber
2 2 Lady Gaga
3 - Phish
4 9 Elton John
5 8 Masters
6 10 Taylor Swift

The Week in TicketCity Search – April 2nd

Well, the basketball tournament that everyone is supposed to be following finally shows up this week. Yes, the Final Four is this weekend, and the NCAA Basketball Championship will be decided with a 5th seed guaranteed to be in the mix. While the NIT has been on the list for three weeks now, the Final Four has just arrived to the party. It brought a date, too; the Women’s Final Four slides in to round out the top 5.

The top 2 spots flipped, giving the esteemed Mr. Bieber the #1 position for the first time in his extended tenure on the countdown. One I admit was a bit longer than I anticipated. Lady Gaga follows with George Strait in tow at #3. In the bottom 5 we have 1 newcomer, a returning favorite, and where Taylor Swift, another list member with a lengthy tenure, is holding on.

Our newcomer #6 is Aubrey Drake Graham, who shortens thing up a bit and performs under the mononym Drake. The hip-hop hyphenate started as an actor on the show Degrassi: The Next Generation. Despite the name, I sense there were no Ferengi on this particular Next Generation. His new album is called Thank Me Later and is due out sometime this year. He’s currently on tour and will be playing Austin’s Stubbs BBQ at the end of May.

1 2 Justin Bieber
2 1 Lady Gaga
3 3 George Strait
4 - Final Four
5 - Womens Final Four
6 - Drake
7 6 NIT
8 - Masters
9 10 Elton John
10 5 Taylor Swift

Iron Maiden

I think this may qualify as the most changed top 10 ever. 60% of our entries weren’t there last week, some completely new, some old favorites whose time has come again. The top 5 returns to complete concert dominance, with the Lady at the top for a second consecutive week in a row. Despite some managerial hiccups, the esteemed Mr. Bieber remains at #2, while George Strait returns from a long absence.

Pearl Jam appeared, then vanished, and returns again at #4 along with George’s contemporary country compatriot, Taylor Swift at #5. The National Invitation Tournament (NIT) continues a pretty strong showing at #6. You guys know the actual NCAA Tournament is happening, like, right now… right? The Kentucky Derby makes its first 2010 appearance on the countdown at #7. There’s ample time to get seats for this year’s Derby and Oaks.

Jay Z appears after an absence not quite as long as George Strait’s, but a pretty big nonetheless. Our notable newcomer this week is Iron Maiden, another in a long line of venerable rock acts to put in an appearance here. The heavy metal mainstays are working on a new album entitled The Final Frontier and will hit the tour circuit this summer in support of the new album.

1 1 Lady Gaga
2 2 Justin Bieber
3 - George Strait
4 - Pearl Jam
5 5 Taylor Swift
6 4 NIT
7 - Kentucky Derby
8 - Jay Z
9 - Iron Maiden
10 - Elton John

Generic Picture of Snow is Generic

Again the quadrennial winter sports competition is the week’s winner by a huge margin, thanks to the many various ways people searched for it, though none included “quadrennial winter sports competition”, sadly. Elton John bolts to the top of the week’s concert performers, kicking the esteemed Mr. Bieber from the #2 slot down to 5, while Taylor Swift held steady at #3.

Entering the chart at #4 is Chromeo, whom Wikipedia informs me is an “electrofunk” duo from Montreal, Canada consisting of “Dave 1″ and “P-Thugg”. In doing so, Wikipedia is also subtly informing me that I am getting old. Chromeo played a gig in Vancouver during those aforementioned games, which probably lead the spike in interest. Right now we don’t list any more events, but Chromeo fans can sign up to receive updates if more become available.

The Black Eyed Peas drop back into the countdown at #6 after a short break, followed by John Mayer who has shown some staying power over the past few weeks. This week’s other new entry is Calibash, which is a concert put together by Los Angeles radio station Latino 96.3. Again, no tickets are up right now, but keep checking back.

1 1 Winter Games
2 6 Elton John
3 3 Taylor Swift
4 - Chromeo
5 2 Justin Bieber
6 - Black Eyed Peas
7 4 John Mayer
8 - Calibash
9 5 WWE
10 7 Michael Bublé
