The countdown is shaking off the bowl hangover. Lots of new faces for January, though our top three are rather familiar. One Direction returns to #1, followed by George Strait. This little rumble will likely continue for months, at least until George does ride away or 1D is overtaken by the inevitable rise of the next boy band. The WWE rounds out the top three as the big January PPV approaches.

Which brings us to Ella Maria Lani Yelich-O’Connor, who, probably for brevity alone, goes by the stage name “Lorde.” Lorde will departing Middle Earth for North America this spring. Her album Pure Heroine is quite the hit, with the biggest single “Royals” going 4x Platinum in the states. She’ll be swinging through central Texas early on the tour, so it’s likely she’ll be in the running for #1 as those dates draw nearer.

The NBA rounds out the top five. Deep in the mid-season both the Kicks and the Nets make countdown appearances.

Coachella hits #7 as the lineup for the 2014 festival landed yesterday. The biggest news is the headlining Outkast reunion. Other big names for 2014 include Lana Del Rey, Motorhead, Queens of the Stone Age, and, since, as mentioned earlier, she’ll be in the hemisphere, Lorde.

Since you’re probably maxing on “Royals”, here’s Lorde’s more recent single “Team,” which is pretty good too. The video is kinda weak, though. Seems like there was some kind of “artistic vision” here but it ended up being very, very cloudy. At least it matches the weather in the video.

10 5 Rose Bowl

Kicking off 2014 with a bit of a gap, as I was out last Friday. With a notable exception, no real surprises this week. Bowls figure heavily, mostly because this is the week a lot of them happen. The Cotton Bowl makes the top of the list, and, like others, there’s still time for some (very) last-minute ticket purchases if you’re interested in checking out the showdown between OK State and Missouri in Arlington.

You’ve got a bit more time with the second bowl on the list, the big finale to the BCS era between Auburn and Florida State. The Gator Bowl is in the books at this point with a win by the Cornhuskers. The Orange Bowl is another last-minute buy for those who can make it to Miami Gardens, where the high will be 75° F with a few clouds. Sounds a lot better than what’s in store for the northeast.

1D and GS both remain exactly where they were 2 weeks ago. The only thing that’s different in who’s keeping them out of the top 2 spots. The second of which is this week’s wildcard, 2NE1. According to the Wikipedia article I’ll just quote to save time, it is “pronounced to anyone or twenty-one, combin(ing) the phrases ’21st century’ and ‘new evolution’.” They are a K-Pop girl group who just announced a new world tour. Unfortunately, their definition of “world” is short a couple hemispheres, including, I regret to inform you, dear reader, our own. So that means we probably won’t have a lot of tickets for the tour as it stands.

That being said, I am not missing an opportunity to provide you a bit of 2NE1 video magic. We’ve got a washed-out palette, what appears to be an 80′s vintage car, along with some fake snow in this video for a tune that translates to “Missing You,” their latest #1 hit. Protip, while there are at least 2 English phrases in this video, the rest is pretty much Korean.

10 - Luke Bryan

Bit of a reversal from last week. The bottom are now the top. Beyoncé returns to the rather familiar position atop the countdown she occupied for some time earlier this year, while the WWE’s trek through Texas moves them up to second place. Last week’s top two had to make room, and did so in an orderly fashion, moving to #3 and #4.

The brief post-announcement week where bowls shine inevitably comes to an end. A couple of bowl games hung on this week: the Rose and the Alamo. For what it’s worth (very little), there were a few more bowls hanging around the 11-20 area. We still have tickets to pretty much any bowl you may be interested in, so if you’re waiting until the last-minute, be advised that minute hurtles ever closer…

The Nets remind us that the NBA regular season continues as well. The NBA has a tradition of playing games on Christmas Day, so perhaps the Nets’ home game against the Bulls on the 25th is the reason they shot up in the rankings this week. Other big Christmas Day games include the Thunder at Knicks, Rockets at Spurs, and Heat at Lakers.

After the Bowls pushed a lot of the regulars out last week, they all came rushing back through the door. Joel, Timberlake, and Bryan all return to the countdown. I’m sure even more familiar faces will be visible once the season had ended. Since we’ve got nothing new, it’s back to some old favorites. More Joel, this time the late 80s, socially conscious version:

9 6 WWE
10 4 Beyoncé

Look at this way college football fans, if you add all the bowls together, they totally beat 5 kids from the UK. Classic case of a split vote keeps One Direction on top, and George Strait in a comfortable second place.

This brings us to the rich, nougaty center of the countdown, the post-bowl announcement frenzy. The Rose Bowl comes out on top, featuring a showdown between Stanford and Michigan State. Up next is the sweetest bowl, Sugar, which will bring Alabama and Oklahoma together. A bit of local seasoning may have given the Alamo and Cotton Bowls their respective places. They’re followed by Ohio State and Clemson in the Orange Bowl and a Rice / Mississippi State match-up in the Liberty Bowl.

Quite a few more Bowls that finished out of the Top 10, of course, including the final BCS Bowl between Florida State and Auburn. The four team playoff era begins next year. It appears there isn’t a lot of nostalgia for the current system, but just wait 20 years for people start saying things like “things were sooo much better back when we had the BCS game!” Okay… maybe not.

Beyoncé holds onto the top 10, possibly with a last second boot from that brand new album that just appeared out of nowhere. It’s a “visual album”, which appears to translate into “there’s videos for pretty much all the songs.” Which begs the question, nobody noticed Beyoncé filming 17 music videos? The only thing on YouTube is 30 second previews, but still the best option I have this week. So, enjoy your preview of a medium that was considered basically a commercial for a song in days past…

10 8 Pink

Okay, so, fair enough, new tour announced, thus I have no reason to expect the top spot to be otherwise occupied at this point. Occupied with a very, very comfortable margin, of course. George didn’t go down without a fight. He racked up some impressive numbers in a second place performance that would have been an easy win on any other week. The SEC Championship lands in third place as two teams that are not Alabama meet up to crown the winner

Beyoncé’s return this week likely has something to do with her tour winding through Texas this weekend. Fans are running out of time to get to the Mrs. Carter Show, as she will be wrapping things up near the end of the month at the Barclay’s Center. Billy Joel still has gas in the tank, rounding out the top five this week.

Like Mrs. Carter, the WWE will be stomping around Texas in the next couple weeks, with a big PPV in Houston on the 15th followed by three more shows in Austin, San Antonio, and Corpus Christi.

In at #8, Baylor’s season ending game with the Longhorns. There’s still time get your tickets to the big TicketCity VIP Tailgate before the game. I’d go into all the awesome stuff that’s going on there, but suffice to say, it’s happening in a heated tent. Anyone looking at the forecast for Saturday will certainly appreciate that.

John Mayer drops by at #9 this week. Not sure if this is his first appearance or not. He’s part of this week’s rather large fraternity of “people doing stuff in Texas.” Specifically, he’s playing the Frank Erwin Center tonight, so here’s a taste of what you may hear at the concert tonight.
