Well, Tool fans represent. This one I didn’t expect, and it certainly changed up the landscape a bit. Changing it even more is 5 Seconds of Summer, who, for the moment at least, Wikipedia describes as a pop punk band from Australia. As Wikipedia music genre edit wars go, this one is pretty tame so far. If these boys become more famous, expect it to heat up. Nothing like indulging in a bit of schadenfreude watching music nerds argue tirelessly about mundane trivia.

The changes at the top throw Bruno down to third place, from which he finally dislodged One Direction. Since I talked about their 3rd place streak last week, I jinxed it for them. Sorry, guys. Miley Cyrus returns to fill the gap between them, as the first shows of her Bangerz Tour have begun, with the accompanying flurry of tongue-focused press coverage.

The bottom five finds a lot of juggling from last week, along with another new face on the countdown. Lana Del Rey hasn’t announced any new tour dates, but she will be live around the West Coast for a few shows in April. She did announce a new album entitled Ultra-Violence, a term I am primarily familiar with as a difficulty mode in the original Doom. And, yes, I beat the game on said difficulty level, thank you very much.

Because it’s more amusing this way, I present proto-Lana. See, Lana’s real name is Elizabeth Grant, and she released her first music under the name Lizzy Grant. This is 2008′s “Kill Kill” from the EP of the same name. After perusing the channel this is from, it appears this one is much like the rest of her early efforts, 80% stock footage and 20% shots of her singing. No doubt economical for the artist just starting out. Doesn’t seem like the style changed over the years. I could be accused of liking some slow, down-tempo stuff, but even I find her to be the musical equivalent of NyQuil.

10 1 George Strait

Interesting shake-up this week, with modern country securing the top spot and classic country taking a pretty big tumble. Luke Bryan makes the leap from #5 to snatch the crown from George Strait who hangs on, but only barely, at #10. Bryan is again part of the summer Country Megaticket shows, and judging by his performance here, the most anticipated among a strong group of performers.

Not only part of the Megaticket, Luke will be showing up at the #2 spot as well. The Houston Rodeo makes a strong climb from #7 last week. With little more than a month to go, expect some strong showings from the Rodeo in the coming weeks.

As mentioned earlier this week, Katy Perry’s new tour will be hitting North America this June. The Prismatic Tour is currently in Europe, but will be spending most of the summer in the US and Canada, wrapping up in Houston in October.

In what I can only assume is a bit of halo effect from “current events,” the Esteemed Mr. Bieber returns to our hallowed countdown halls. Not sure if the lack of any concert dates is a disappointment or a relief to the intrepid searchers…

Tradition demands I use a Katy Perry vid since she debuted on the countdown this week. I already posted the new one in the tour update, so we’re back to “Roar” now. The video is the touching story of a plane crash survivor learning to make her way in the jungle, and make clothes out of salad. The best fact I know about the video is that Katy Perry has a real pet cat named Kitty Purry, who is not the tiger in this video (or any other tiger, for that matter).

10 - Jason Aldean

George wins the week, with 1D falling to #3 thanks to a little more football fever. The Seahawks bid for the NFC championship shoots them to second place. They have home field advantage against the Niners this Sunday. Still time to pick up tickets to the game if you’re going to be in The 206 this weekend. Spoiler alert, there is a chance of rain. Those looking a little deeper into the playoffs pushed the Super Bowl up #6 this week.

Coachella gains three to land at #4. I suspect it will depart soon, as the actual shows are still a few months off. The post-announcement honeymoon is coming to a close. Familiar faces return this week, chief among them Luke Bryan. He is joined by countdown favorites Justin Timberlake and Jason Aldean a little further down the list.

The Houston Rodeo make this year debut in the seventh spot as the full concert schedule dropped this week. As usual, big names abound, including the aforementioned Mr. Bryan as well as the Eli Young Band, Usher, Maroon 5, Robin Thicke, and Keith Urban. Brad Paisley gets things started on 4th, and the Zac Brown Band will close things out on the 23rd.

Almost closing out the Houston Rodeo is The Band Perry, who will be performing on the 22nd of March. If you’re counting, and I am, that’s three “Bands” in the lineup this year. Instead of posting the insufferable promo video of them doing the Houston Rodeo line-up announcement, let’s just watch a video. This video is, I’ll say… “inspired by” the game of chess. Raises some questions about the artistic director’s familiarity with the fan base. On the other hand, it’s people running at either and then punching, so maybe I take that back.

10 - Luke Bryan

Bit of a reversal from last week. The bottom are now the top. Beyoncé returns to the rather familiar position atop the countdown she occupied for some time earlier this year, while the WWE’s trek through Texas moves them up to second place. Last week’s top two had to make room, and did so in an orderly fashion, moving to #3 and #4.

The brief post-announcement week where bowls shine inevitably comes to an end. A couple of bowl games hung on this week: the Rose and the Alamo. For what it’s worth (very little), there were a few more bowls hanging around the 11-20 area. We still have tickets to pretty much any bowl you may be interested in, so if you’re waiting until the last-minute, be advised that minute hurtles ever closer…

The Nets remind us that the NBA regular season continues as well. The NBA has a tradition of playing games on Christmas Day, so perhaps the Nets’ home game against the Bulls on the 25th is the reason they shot up in the rankings this week. Other big Christmas Day games include the Thunder at Knicks, Rockets at Spurs, and Heat at Lakers.

After the Bowls pushed a lot of the regulars out last week, they all came rushing back through the door. Joel, Timberlake, and Bryan all return to the countdown. I’m sure even more familiar faces will be visible once the season had ended. Since we’ve got nothing new, it’s back to some old favorites. More Joel, this time the late 80s, socially conscious version:

6 9 Billy Joel
7 - Kanye West
8 - Pink
9 - Miley Cyrus
10 4 One Direction

This is the part of the blog where I say something about “sexy” being returned to the top of the countdown, presumably in serviceable condition. With that out the way, I shall also note the previous weeks’ top 2 made room for the aforementioned “sexy” return. Finally, I’ll say something about George Strait climbing back to fourth place, which is merely a statement of fact and not a tired Justin Timberlake joke.

Billy Joel showed up last week, and I didn’t say anything, mostly because I was wondering if he’d stick around. Lo, he has done that, and climbed up three spots. He doesn’t get out quite as much as he did in the 80s, but fans will be able to see him again next January. Fun fact, when he announced in ’93 that River of Dreams was going to be his last pop album, I scoffed. Fully admit he’s kept that promise the last 20 years (holy crap), but time is on my side…

The rest of the bottom five features some of the recent, usual suspects in the on-again, off-again bunch. Kanye, Pink, and Miley have all been sighted recently, but have had trouble maintaining a stable presence on the countdown. One Direction barely clings to the top 10, but cling they do.

Since Billy made it a second week, no reason not to engage in a little nostalgia. Way back in that greatest of decades, the 1980s, this video was played a lot on a network called MTV, and it starred a lady named Christie Brinkley, with whom Mr. Joel fell in deep smit. They got married and lived happily ever after… or divorced in 1994… one of those.
