What a difference two weeks makes. Only two survivors and even more football. The latter isn’t especially surprising considering the season. Football season proper ushers in this week, after all. The Saints come out on top, with the 49ers moving up to third place, and the Cowboys landing in sixth place.

On the college side, the Horned Frogs of TCU come in fifth place, followed by LSU in seventh and Notre Dame in tenth. This may be the first time the Fighting Irish have shown up in a top 10. 2012 took them all the way to the BCS, and this year they’ll be looking to return for a win this time around.

It’s not all pigskin this week. Justin Timberlake manages to secure the second spot, and Pink returns to grab the fourth spot. The US Open’s last full week grabs eight place. The championship rounds run through Monday and there are tickets still available.

With Pink back, why not welcome her with this week’s video selection? Here’s her last #1 single “Just Give Me a Reason”, featuring Nate Ruess. When not hanging with Pink, Nate fronts the band fun. When the band’s name is written at the end of a sentence, the period pulls double duty.

9 - Justin Timberlake
10 - Keith Urban

Pretty big shake up this week. Bruno Mars nails the top spot in a five point jump, leaving 1D only a week to enjoy their return. Out of the clear blue sky, Elton John takes the second spot. John, who is recovering from surgery to remove his appendix, will be doing four weeks at Caesar’s Palace starting mid-September. Not sure why the sudden explosion of interest, but I’m sure Elton doesn’t mind.

Elton’s arrival and Mars’ Hail Mary play leave Luke Bryan nowhere to go but down, landing softly at #3, while 1D’s landing was not quite so elegant. Wrapping things up in the top are the venerable Cowboys, who are even in their 2 preseason contests to date.

The Texans follow, kicking off the bottom five, in one of the few times I’ve used that idiom relevantly. The Bulldogs round out the rich, nougaty, football center of this weeks’ countdown.

Selena Gomez makes her countdown debut this week. Despite claims of focusing on a film career, she’s put out her solo debut album, Stars Dance, and is hitting the road for a late summer / fall tour. Joining her on the countdown, not the tour, are returning favorites Justin Timberlake and Keith Urban. Urban has been absent from the top 10 for a while now, but is back with a new fall tour featuring Little Big Town and Dustin Lynch.

Selena’s debut on the countdown and Selena’s debut single from her latest album, that’s synergistic enough, I suppose. This appears to be the standard attractive-pop-star travelog sort of vid, with some bonus HD stock footage of waves thrown in for good measure.

8 8 Luke Bryan
9 9 Houston Texans
10 - Lollapalooza

With the Gold Cup in the history books for another couple of years (we won in a 1-0 scorcher), the countdown turns to that other sort of football. Or it will towards the bottom, at least. Like a healthy immune system, the top five eventually expels all sports-related entities and returns to its natural, concert-only state. This week the esteemed Mr. Bieber recaptures the top spot from which he was exiled months and months ago.

Pearl Jam hits the countdown in a big way, as their recently announced fall tour heats up. The band will release a new album, Lightning Bolt, ahead of the first tour date, followed by 24 more dates in North America. The band then takes trip down under in January.

Also returning this week, though hardly breaking from touring, is Maroon 5. They’ve been on the road already this summer, and are now teamed up with Kelly Clarkson and Rozzi Crane for the 2013 edition of the Honda Civic Tour. As in previous years, fans can enter a contest to win a Honda Civic with colors customized by the headliners.

The Cowboys and Texans share spots on the countdown this week as the NFL preseason is almost upon us. Very much upon us is the Lollapalooza festival, which begins today and lasts the weekend. Headliners include The Killers, Mumford & Sons, and The Cure.

Wait, The Cure? What year is this!?

8 6 Lil Wayne
9 - WWE
10 7 Justin Timberlake

Some musical chairs this week at the top. 1D keeps the streak going, but the Biebs and Beyoncé trade places as Mrs. Carter’s Tour keeps going strong. Luke Bryan wisely stays out of it, content to hold down the number four spot, while the week’s biggest wild card drops in on the fifth spot.

The western hemisphere’s entry in the category of longest pro sports league acronym, CONCACAF, is nearing the culmination of is biennial Gold Cup championship. The Spanish-speaking of its many fans may know it as the Copa de Oro. The final is booked at Soldier Field in Chicago on the 28th, ample time to get tickets for the big show.

The Gold Cup’s sudden success did delay Taylor Swift’s charge for the top. She’s joined by someone also familiar with the neighborhood and looking for a comeback, Bruno Mars. Lil Wayne’s momentum stalled and he drops two spots, landing just above the wrestling ring. The WWE usually pops in this time of year in the run up to the Summerslam PPV.

Here is Bruno in his latest video, providing flashbacks to the sort of video effects I probably thought were cool in the early 80s.

Oh, and don’t forget to comment on how I’m wrong about CONCACAF being the longest pro sports league acronym in the western hemisphere. This is the internet, after all.

10 - John Mayer

Reunion of sorts in the top five, with 1D, Bieber, Beyoncé and Taylor Swift all back. Swift has been out of play recently, but there is certainly no shortage of concert dates left in the Red Tour. It won’t wrap up until the end of the September.

The bottom five is a mix of returning favorites, starting with Lily Wayne. Wayne is headlining the America’s Most Wanted tour, with TI and, date depending, either 2 Chainz or Tyga. The tour lasts through the end of August.

Phish is back once more. They too will be busy until the end of August, playing multi-day mini-festivals at amphitheaters and pavilions around the US.

The week’s one sporting event is the Cowboys. The NFL preseason is just a few weeks away and excitement builds steadily. College is right behind. Noticed a few of the usual college suspects making their way up towards the top 10 this week.

I sense it’s probably not the greatest idea to go with a Lil Wayne vid, and no one has time to make it through an hour and half Phish jam, so I’ll use this space to welcome back Jon Mayer to the countdown with a video of him providing tips on how to look like Carlos Santana.
