The Week in TicketCity Search – Buffett Blew into Town

TicketCity Week in Search

Week of
Apr. 29th
1 - Jimmy Buffett
2 4 One Direction
3 2 Taylor Swift
4 5 Kentucky Oaks
5 - George Strait
6 Darren Criss
7 - Beyoncé
8 - Paul McCartney
9 10 Justin Bieber
10 - Kentucky Derby

I believe I know where Mr. Buffett is gonna go when the volcano blow: top of the TicketCity Week in Search Countdown! This (horrible) joke brought to you by the fact that I’m old enough to have grown up with the song “Volcano” as a staple of top 40 radio. It is also part of “The Big 8″ you’re likely to hear at any Buffet concert, including the one tonight at the Austin 360 Amphitheater. Thanks to the wind, you still have a chance to see this leg of the Songs From Somewhere Tour after it was rescheduled from last night.

Lots of movement across the countdown, though as usual the boys in 1D aren’t doing a lot of it. After a slight falter, they’re back at #2, followed by Miss Swift, who lands at #3.

The Oaks gains a spot. Last chance to get your Derby on this weekend. The most exciting 2 minutes in sports just makes it to the countdown at #10. Ladies, if you’ve been thinking: “I’ve got this really big hat and no place to wear it,” then you can’t miss the Derby.

George Strait rounds out the top 5. As expected, the June 1st show at the Alamodome is heating up. George will likely have a good run the next few weeks. He’s followed by Darren Criss, who is… um… one sec… from Glee! Yes, Wikipedia tells me that he is from Glee, and that I am… um… old, yes, old.

Both Beyoncé and Paul McCartney return this week. Each of their tours will get underway this month, so perhaps Beyoncé will one again become the powerhouse she was months ago.

The Week in TicketCity Search – Swift Rush to the Top

TicketCity Week in Search

Week of
Apr. 22nd
1 - Rush
2 4 Taylor Swift
3 - The Lumineers
4 2 One Direction
5 3 Kentucky Oaks
6 - Bruno Mars
7 - Dallas Cowboys
8 - New Orleans Saints
9 - Carrie Underwood
10 8 Justin Bieber

At the risk of having my interneting privileges revoked, I won’t make any snarky comments about Rush, who landed at the top of the countdown this week. They’re on the Clockwork Angels Tour, which takes them through August with over 20 more dates. Taylor Swift reverses a downward slide and returns to the #2 spot.

The Lumineers make their countdown debut this week. The indie folk rockers have been raising their profile in the past year or so, and their self titled debut album has been certified Platinum. The group is quite busy for the next couple months, which is good for all the fans who’ll be seeing them all over the country. That includes the fans around Austin at tonight’s show in the shiny new Austin360 Amphitheater.

One Direction falls out of the top three, though that will likely be a brief inconvenience, and the Oaks slips a bit down to #5.

Bruno Mars returns this week after short but strong run earlier this year. His tour has yet to officially kick off, that’s not until June, so he may not have the momentum to hang around too long.

Finally, a little early NFL fever hits the countdown this week. With the official 2013 schedules out and the draft ongoing, it’s not too surprising fans are getting the urge to check out some games.

The Week in TicketCity Search – Beatles, Horses & Motorcycles

TicketCity Week in Search

Week of
Apr. 15t
1 3 Paul McCartney
2 4 One Direction
3 - Kentucky Oaks
4 6 Taylor Swift
5 10 Rihanna
6 - MotoGP
7 - Kid Rock
8 7 Justin Bieber
9 - Beyonce
10 - Kentucky Derby

Paul McCartney classes up the joint at #1 this week. He dropped in at three last week and spent little time politely queuing his way to the top. The previous champs Mumford & Sons are nowhere to be found. The boys in 1D decided to slip into the McCartney motorcade and return to the #2 spot after what was their worst performance in some time last week: the dreaded #4.

Concerts couldn’t keep hold of the countdown permanently. We’re about 2 weeks out from Derby weekend in Louisville. The more economically friendly Oaks enters the countdown in the third spot. The Derby just slides into the countdown at #10. I’m sure it will be climbing up a bit over the next couple of weeks.

Epic segway time.

Speaking of horsepower… the MotoGP shows up at #6. MotoGP is a more Twitter-friendly way of saying Motorcycle Grand Prix, which is impressive because it predates Twitter by a while. The very Twitter unfriendly “MotoGP Red Bull Grand Prix of The Americas” is on for this weekend at the Circuit of the Americas here in Austin. For the record, the spec on a MotoGP engine calls for 240 horsepower. That’s a lot of Derbys.

Of interest on the concert side this week, Kid Rock’s latest tour has earned him the #7 spot, and Beyonce, once queen of the countdown, had returned, but at the slightly more modest #9 spot. She’s playing dates in Europe at the moment, but will return stateside this June when she will likely make a much stronger play for the top once more.

Tips from TicketCity: Kentucky Derby and Oaks

The Kentucky Derby is officially only one week away. Hopefully you have your tickets (No? We can help…), hotel reservations, and hat ready to go. But in case you’ve procrastinated, some of the Derby veterans from the TicketCity team have offered up their advice for making the most of this historic event.

As Sean Adam’s explained in a previous blog post, the Kentucky Derby is so much more than just a two minute race. It’s about tradition, fashion, memories, and maybe crossing a big item off of your bucket list.

Below you’ll find some of the favorites that keep Rafael, Rick, and Lindsay going back to Louisville year after year. Looking for tickets or have general questions about the event? Best Seats

Personal preference. A great time can be had anywhere. Personal preference, but 3rd floor or higher arguably the best for visibility/ perspective. Anywhere has a good view, but I like the Turf Club’s view best.

Best Food

Hot Brown Sandwich, Beer Cheese Hot Brown Sandwich  Hot Brown Sandwich

Best Drinks

Bourbon, Oaks Lily, Mint Julep Mint Julep just to say you had one. Mint juleps aren’t great but you have to drink one. Oak Lily’s are delicious!

Best Lodging

Seelbach, Brown Hotel, 21C are the best high end.  Crown Plaza Airport Hotel has a great atmosphere. Galt House(great central location downtown)  Sheraton

Transportation Tips

No cheap way to do it if you plan to drink.  Designate a driver and park in somebody’s yard.  Trackside parking passes cost $400. Taxi if possible. Traffic is ridiculous. Shuttle from your hotel or cab it.  Parking near the track is hard to come by unless you get there early.

Required Attire

Spring colors. Tacky is okay. Girls have to wear a hat. Depends on where you sit. Infield: Shorts and flip flops; Clubhouse or better: Suit, tie, hats a plus. Crazy, larger-than- life hats, suits (seersucker is always popular)

Necessary Souvenirs

Dated derby glass. You may catch some racing goggles if you sit in the low rows of 119. Dated Derby glasses. I bring these back every year for my family and friends. Dated Derby glasses (FREE if you drink mint juleps/lily’s which is a MUST at the Derby)

Dining and Nightlife

Catch some Derby festival parades throughout the week, Jeff Ruby’s is a hot spot. Jeff Ruby’s steakhouse downtown near Galt House. Great food! Pricey! Numerous celeb sightings and tough to get reservations, so call early. Jeff Ruby’s had good food and a piano bar for after dinner. Several celebrities were there the day before Oaks.

The Week in TicketCity Search – May 6th

TicketCity Week in Search

1 3 Kentucky Derby
2 4 Kentucky Oaks
3 7 Maná
4 2 Taylor Swift
5 5 Adele
6 1 Justin Bieber
7 - ACL Fest
8 - Britney Spears
9 - Arcade Fire
10 9 WWE

Small surprise in the top 5 this week. Not surprising is the Derby topping the list, with the Oaks right behind. The Oaks is today, but still time to get into the big race tomorrow. The Derby promises to be exciting as ever this year, and TicketCity personnel are down in Louisville to make sure you get your tickets.

The small surprise this week is Maná managing bypass some pretty famous performers to end up the top concert act on the list. Pretty magical, if you ask me.

The famous in question follow Maná, starting with Taylor Swift and ending up with the esteemed Mr. Bieber, who takes a pretty big tumble from the top of the list. ACL Fest follows as buzz builds for the announcement of the 2011 line-up. The full list goes out May 17th, so the fest will probably hang around the list for a few more weeks before the summer lul sets in.

Britney and Arcade Fire both return to the list after absences of various lengths. Recently ever-present in the bottom 5, the WWE again rounds out the list at #10 this week.
