Color me surprised. If you’d bet me 1D would keep the top spot throughout football season, I would have taken that bet. See, now you’re out a free lunch…

Yes, August has dawned and college football clobbers the teens from England, sending them down not one, but two spots to #3. This is a fairly auspicious occasion, as One Direction has owned the countdown since early spring. I had just given up on trying to write title puns for them. Who knew all I had to do was wait another week?

Real Madrid surges back after a little dip to the bottom, heading up to #4, a number you won’t see much in the average soccer game score. College football rounds out the top 5, with the Razorbacks climbing one spot from last week.

Most of our former concert powerhouses populate the bottom five. Some guy named Bieber kicks things off at #6 this week, after falling another 3 spots. Jason Aldean squeaks out a small comeback, after falling from great heights he climbs back to the #7 spot this week. The world of scripted sporting events returns again, as the WWE hits #8. To quote a line from the ’96 remake of Sgt. Bilko: “I like a sporting event in which I know the outcome ahead of time. It’s more organized.”

1D remains perched atop the countdown, easily fending off challenges from all quarters. Mostly from the old guard and other “popular” musicians, but this week from America’s Team. The Cowboys surge from #5 this week, but that rush isn’t enough to score the top spot. As with most previous attempts, they fell pretty short of the goal in a performance that may have been worthy of a #1 were they not pitted against the all-encompassing power of five teenage boys from England.

That Bieber guy keeps hanging around for some reason, this week quietly climbing back to #3. College football is well represented this week, with the Longhorns slipping a bit to #4, Arkansas appearing in the #6 spot, and Mississippi State holding steady from last week at #8.

KISS, absent for some time despite touring pretty regularly this summer with Mötley Crüe, shows up in the fifth spot. They are swinging through Texas this weekend, so I’m betting that’s why.

Coldplay climbs to the #7 spot while Jason Aldean tumbles pretty hard from a peak in second to #9. Still not sure what caused Mr. Aldean’s sudden rocket ride (almost) to the top last week, but that ride has ended pretty conclusively. Finally, Real Madrid returns again as their US tour continues through early August. They’ll be back in Spain before the month is out, so get your tickets now.

One Direction bested all of college basketball in the heart of “madness” this week, so I think that means tween girls everywhere just won the office bracket pool. The UK boy band crushed the competition, even when all things NCAA were yet again bundled into a single entry. The “Up All Night Tour” will be hitting the shores of North America in late May and continue through July.

One Direction will be performing at #3, the Kid’s Choice Awards, so stateside audiences can enjoy a little preview of the tour. Entry #4 is a nominee, so quite a big night for the Kid’s Choice Awards.

In its final week, the Austin Rodeo slipped to #6. Springsteen returns to #7, and the Derby makes another appearance at #8.

In other, slightly more rock-oriented tour news, KISS is paring up with umlaut aficionados Mötley Crüe on “The Tour.” The two hard rock legends will be filling arenas near you starting in July and finishing up in September.

The countdown is certainly seeing a lot of movement over the past month. Another week where only the top 5 sees any survivors from the previous week. In a return to form, concert performers regain all top 3 spots, with Rush bouncing back to #2 and Lady Gaga recovering from her fall to regain the #3 slot. That leaves local favorite the Longhorns to take #4 as the only college team to return from the previous week.

Rounding out the week’s top five is Jersey Boys, in a rare appearance from a Broadway show that isn’t Wicked. Likely this is because a touring production of the show is currently playing in our home town of Austin over at Bass Concert Hall. I’ve helpfully linked our local page in the top 10 list so only Austin Jersey Boys shows will appear. Feel free to take a break from football fever and take in a little of the legitimate theatre.

The Razorbacks lead off the bottom 5, in a light week for college football. Drake appears again, after disappearing the previous week. At this point I’m just wishing Drake fans would develop some consistency. Dave Matthews and his eponymous Band appear at #8, joining Kiss in a block of performers who commonly appear and disappear in the rankings.

Finally, the US Open appears on the radar as we near the first serve of the 2010 tournament, now down a Serena Williams. It’s a long tournament, so ample time to get some choice seats to all the action at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Hayley Williams

This is certainly an interesting week. Over half the countdown wasn’t there last week, and, first and foremost, the top entry doesn’t sing. While the 1985 Chicago Bears proved it’s not out of the question for a football team to release a hit single, it does remain highly unlikely. The Cowboys reach the top of the countdown as we’re about a week away from their first preseason game. This shuffles our usual suspects down a couple spots.

Paramore appears out of nowhere to romance the #4 spot. That was kind of punny… I apologize… especially since they don’t even spell it that way. Paramore is a alt rock band fronted by Hayley Williams out of Franklin, Tennessee. They are the headliners of the 2010 Honda Civic Tour, which this year includes Tegan and Sara and New Found Glory.

Rounding out the top 5 is the Longhorns, also rapidly approaching their season kickoff. The bottom five is an interesting assortment, leading off with comedian Kathy Griffin, followed by Rush and a returning KISS, who have been absent for a while. Pretty sure that this is Bob Dylan’s first time on the countdown, and I’ll forgo explaining who he is. Dylan’s consummate artistry is in excellent company as the live tour of So You Think You Can Dance finishes out the countdown.
