Adele hangs onto the top spot this week. She leads off a countdown that sees a little more variety returning. Coming in second is Katy Perry, who surged to the #2 spot after a few weeks in the middle of the countdown. Katy’s California Dreams Tour continues throughout summer and on into fall and winter. It will be interesting to see if she can hang on once we get closer to football season. By the end of August, concert performers have lot more competition on the top 10.

I’m probably not breaking the news that the NFL season is back on as of… last Monday. That was reflected in the countdown this week as “America’s Team” enters at #5. While the Dallas Cowboys are the only NFL team to make it this week, there is more football to be found in the bottom half of the list.

College football makes another appearance after a brief peak from LSU back on the 15th. Fans of the storied Notre Dame football legacy are eager to see how they fare this season. The SEC’s Mississippi State Bulldogs round out the list. With the NFL back, college football will once again share the stage this season as they have most every year. While it may have been interesting to see what emerged from a college football-only season, there’s a lot of people very relieved it’s business as usual, us included.

10 9 Kentucky Derby

Davis Cup stays on top again this week. Will be interesting to see what kind of staying power this event has, since it won’t happen until July. Someone who has demonstrated some staying power so far, the esteemed Mr. Bieber, returns to the #2 spot recently vacated by the Frozen Four. He’s followed by Adele, who has climbed the chart in the recent weeks, and Lil Wayne, who has been a fixture in the top 5 recently. Rounding things out are the Kings of Leon, who have been around but lacking the consistency of their fellow top 5 entries.

Taylor Swift is unable to make it back to the top 5, ending up at #6 this week. She’s followed by new entry Mumford & Sons. The English folk rock band recently achieved success in the states with Grammy-nominated hit “Little Lion Man” and is touring in spring and summer in the US this year. Their current album, Sigh No More, is certified Platinum and they are currently writing songs for a follow-up.

Country stars Kenny Chesney and Tim McGraw both return to the bottom 5 this week, providing a very country / folk feel to things. The Derby finishes last, which is a respectable showing here, but not something those 3-year-old thoroughbred horses should be striving for.

Interesting combination of same and different this week. First up, the top four from last week take one step down in order to make room for the Davis Cup. The Davis Cup is, of course, only the biggest international men’s tennis championship today, and 2011 is the 100th edition. The entire tournament is played in rounds that start in March and don’t end until December. One set of Quarterfinals will be held in July at the Frank Erwin Center, featuring the US team taking on Spain. This likely will become a bit of a hot ticket for Austin as its debut on the countdown suggests.

As alluded previously, the rest of the top 5 is the same as last week, with the Frozen Four now at #2 and Lil Wayne at #5. Adele pops back from the bottom of last week’s countdown to take the #6 spot, leading the way for some returning favorites and a new entry.

That new entry is Selena Gomez, who, while she has a recording career of her own, is probably better known at the moment as the girlfriend of the #3 entry on the countdown. Amusingly her Wikipedia article currently omits this fact, and I doubt this blog will be considered a “reliable source.” Granted I’m making a huge assumption that it will still be true by the time I press the “publish” button on this post. Her band, Selena Gomez & the Scene have a new, as-yet-unamed album coming out in June and are touring in support of it.

Rounding out the list we see Taylor Swift return after a few week’s absence, and the big racing weekend at Churchill Downs finishes things off.

10 5 Prince

Still no big splash from March Madness on the countdown this week. Looks like we may need to wait until the Final Four to see it. That said, the Austin Rodeo’s brief, shining moment at #1 has ended and the esteemed Mr. Bieber returns to the top. Gaga slides into #2 and the very top of the countdown returns to last summer, when these two battled it out regularly for the same spots. Elton John wasn’t in the mix last summer, though. He’s on tour, part greatest hits, part support for his latest collaborative album with Leon Russell called The Union.

The WWE and Lil Wayne trade up a bit as they round out the top 5. Leading off the second half of the countdown is Mötley Crüe, the band whose name kicked off a untold millions of searches for the “Insert Special Characters” dialogue in word processing programs around the world. Their tour is winding its way through Texas in the next few days. Because I value my readers furthering their knowledge, I present this Wikipedia article. Get it before the deletionists do.

Adele returns after taking a short break from the countdown, followed by Bob Seger, who took a much longer break from music in general. Bob returned in 2006 with his first new album, Face the Promise, since 1995. He hasn’t been on tour since the one in 2007 in support of that release. The 2011 tour currently runs through May, though he’s suggested he may tour again in the fall of this year.

Taking a short break from sports this week. It’s not that March Madness didn’t kick off, it’s just those (now) 2nd and 3rd round games never really get enough traction to crack the top 10. So many games, so many ways to search. Not unexpectedly, the Austin Rodeo leaps to the top. Only about to the half way mark, there’s ample time to catch the acts lined up for next week. The Rodeo ended the esteemed Mr. Bieber’s streak at the top, and did nothing to Lady Gaga, who remains at #3.

Lil Wayne bounces back from the bottom five to nab the #4 spot, while The Artist Formerly Known as the Artist Formerly Known as Prince appears out of nowhere to grab the #5 spot, and grant me the opportunity to use that now highly cliche joke. He’s not really a fan of “the Internet” anymore. Not sure why, it’s a monumental human achievement that’s used primarily to exchange feline photography captioned in 36 point, black stroke, white Impact font.

The WWE leads off the lower 5, where Kenny Chesney returns to the mix. Also returning after a rather long absence from the countdown is Jimmy Buffett. Buffett was injured during an encore in a show back in January, but has since recovered and is back on the road this April with the Welcome to Fin Land Tour. Taylor Swift and Bon Jovi round things out this week.
