This week’s top 10 list is very similar to last week. The Longhorns come out on top once more, possibly with a bit of the residual TX-OU boost from last weekend. In part 2 of a very Texas top 3, we find the Rangers. They jumped up from #10 for reasons that should be clear. Their NLCS run against the Tigers will be over this weekend, one way or another. At #3 the Cowboys hang in there for another week.

Look who is climbing back up the charts to #4 this week: the esteemed Mr. Bieber. Can’t keep a pop star down, it would seem. Following close on his heels is Taylor Swift, who lost a couple spots this week, falling to #5 after peaking last week at #3.

The bottom five finds some of our recent and usual college football suspects. The Yellow Jackets, Bulldogs, and Tigers have been bouncing around the countdown for weeks now. They’re joined this week by Baylor, who squeeze into the #10 spot, just behind the other Tigers on the list, those from the Detroit.

My prediction about Taylor Swift’s chart success hit a snag. A “small” one: Texas-OU Weekend. The Red River (totally not a) Shootout goes down at the Cotton Bowl tomorrow. TicketCity will have a team up in Dallas for any exceedingly cautious fans who made the decision to go at the very last of minutes.

Dedicated football and Taylor Swift fans can have quite the day in the greater Dallas metro area, as her big concert at Dallas Cowboys Stadium is also Saturday evening.

Rounding out the top 5 are the Cowboys, who drop from the top spot last week.

The bottom five finds a few more college football teams, some of them making their first appearance on the countdown this season.

Way down at the bottom we find the Texas Rangers, who just clenched an appearance in the ALCS. The Rangers made it all the way to the World Series last year, but lost to the SF Giants. I’m sure they plan to change that this year.

Winner this week is no surprise. The 2011 ACL Festival should be getting underway as I type this. Temperature wise it appears it will merely be in the mid 90s, so positively chilly compared to the temperatures Austin has seen for the past few months. Should be quite agreeable by the time headliners like Kanye West, Coldplay, Stevie Wonder, and Arcade Fire hit the big stages in the evening. Still have passes available for anyone who wants to get in.

The reminder of the countdown isn’t all that surprising either, as we find another week of college football goodness. The Aggies are the team of choice this week, as they hang onto the #2 spot. Mississippi State, Texas, and LSU follow after. Texas is the only one of the bunch that moved since last week, having given up the #1 spot to ACL. Before more CFB, the NFL makes an appearance at #6 with the Cowboys.

Arkansas and Alabama provide some more countdown love for the SEC, followed by the other concert performers that managed to hang on. Taylor Swift clings to the #9 spot, and, yes, the esteemed Mr. Bieber returns to us this week. He’d been pushed out last week, the first one in quite a while he’d missed, but that wasn’t destined to last long. We will see how long it takes him to get back to the #1 spot.

Well, after a little time off, I’ve returned to find college football season has started. Yes, the weeks around the September kick-off are some of the few that find the countdown devoted so completely to sports. Can’t quite squeeze everyone with a microphone out, though. The resilient Miss Swift has held on both weeks, tenaciously clinging to the countdown.

Football isn’t the only sport that’s not only held on, but clung to the top five. That would be the US Open, tennis flavor, ongoing for the past couple weeks up in lovely Flushing, NY. Thanks to some rain outs, there’s still a lot of tennis to see. The tournament will run through next Monday, the 12th.

Another favorite shows up this week, ACL Fest. We’re just a week away from the 2011 festival. Since it seems the local climate remembered it doesn’t have to have three digit temperatures all the time, things are shaping up for a fine few days out at Zilker Park.

Interesting results this week. Looks like last weekend’s Davis Cup had enough enough searches to keep it on the board from Saturday and Sunday alone. ACL surged as we’re nearing the middle of summer and thoughts may be turning to plans for Fall. Well, what passes for Fall around here, at least. ACL is in mid-September this year, so that’s not even technically Fall, just the very end of summer.

Katy Perry jumped a spot to number three, leap frogging last week’s second and third entries. Taylor Swift still ended the week at a respectable number five, while the more recently minted pop star Miss Gomez also fell a spot to number six. Adele made big gains this week as her return to touring nears.

All this week’s new entries are neatly packaged at the end; a nice change from the usual “appearing out of nowhere” and “rushing right to the top.” First off is semi-regular Jason Aldean, who is on tour in support of his recent album My Kinda Party, and had some crossover success with his latest single “Dirt Road Anthem.” Team sports make an uncharacteristic appearance on the summer countdown, with the Phillies making the chart at number nine, and some early shoppers for college football season looking to snag some LSU football tix.
