1D patiently bided their time before finally returning to the top of the countdown. Their ascendancy is somewhat bittersweet, since the former champ, Mumford & Sons had to take an unexpected hiatus due to a medical condition affecting bassist Ted Dwane. Their remaining US tour dates in June have been cancelled, and they won’t make Bonnaroo, replaced by Jack Johnson in the Saturday headliner slot.

Currently the group plans to return at the Glastonbury Festival.

Luke Bryan settles into the third spot, and the rest of the top five checks in with some championship sports. The Spurs aren’t letting the Heat sweep, and the CWS is just about to start. The first game is this weekend, and almost two weeks of the best in college baseball follows at TD Ameritrade Park.

Bieber manages to hold onto the sixth spot, currently his best performance in weeks. Bruno Mars has a bit of a surge, up from last place. Beyoncé moves in the opposite direction, ending down at #8, while Taylor Swift takes over last place from Bruno.

So, since I posted Mumford & Sons last week, this is going to have to happen. I’m sure by now you’ve jammed out to “What Makes You Beautiful”, so here is a different song by One Direction, one I’m old by Wikipedia was very popular in New Zealand:

This week welcomes a lot of returning faces and a single shuffle in the top 3. On the strength of some last-minute searches, George Strait still managed to land the #4 spot, but it’s Mumford & Sons that replace him at the top. This is the English folk rock quartet’s first time at #1. Their show this weekend at the Austin360 Amphitheater is probably helping out a bit there.

Five other guys from the same archipelago hang tight in second place, as does Luke Bryan, who remains in third. Rounding out the top five is Beyoncé, who will be reaching our shores later this month. Buzz for her tour has been pretty solid for months now, so it should be a strong contender for top three once it actually kicks off.

Justin Beiber makes his best showing in a while, climbing up to the sixth spot. The Spurs, who had to wait a little longer than most expected to figure out who they’d be facing in the NBA Finals, follow the Beebs. The (eventual) results were as most expected, so will the Spurs be up to denying LeBron another championship?

The other sporting event on the countdown this week is the College World Series, which begins June 15th at the now only relatively new TD Ameritrade Park. The contest for the top prize in college baseball lasts through the rest of the month, ending on the 25th or 26th.

Here’s the week’s #1 with “I Will Wait.” I like “Little Lion Man” better, but it’s got a dirty word in the chorus. To quote one Ralph Parker, “THE word, the big one, the queen-mother of dirty words…”

George Strait’s gig at the Alamodome hits the top of the countdown this week, surprising no one. This is the last stop of this leg of The Cowboys Rides Away Tour. George will be on the horse and riding for at least 20 more dates in 2014, so fans who can’t make this show will have another shot next year. He’ll be joined by both Martina McBride and Miranda Lambert for the Saturday show.

1D’s residency remains solid. They are a few short weeks away from their show at the BB&T Center which kicks off a rather plentiful set of dates in the States. There seems to be no shortage of demand for them, either. Luke Bryan and Taylor Swift to provide some additional country flavor to the top five, where the WWE rounds things out.

The other set of familiar Brits, Mumford & Sons kick off the bottom five. They (probably) lack the screaming tween girl fan base of 1D, but have done very well nonetheless. They also beat out some rather poppy contenders in the remainder of the countdown, from Beyoncé to Bieber to Bruno.

Timberlike kinda ruined the whole ‘B’ thing I had going there.

Who’s who of big summer concert tours in the top five this week. Taylor Swift enjoys another week at the top, followed by Justin Timberlake. Timberlake’s success may, ironically, be due more to his fall tour announcement than his actual summer tour. Either way, Timberlake fans who’ve been missing him on stage will have a lot to love in 2013.

A returning Luke Bryan follows the Brits on the countdown. Bryan’s latest album, Spring Break…Here to Party, arrived last month, and his summer tour is in full swing. The tour features guests Thompson Square and Florida Georgia Line, giving fans a lot of great country music for their ticket.

Racing at the Circuit of the Americas starts off the bottom five. The V8 Super Car Test event finishes up this Saturday, so you can still have time to check out this unique style of racing.

Beyoncé tumbles a bit this week, and Bruno climbs up to catch her. Rounding things out we’ve got a couple of pro teams. The Bruins going up against the Rangers in the second round of the NHL Playoffs, and the Texas Rangers are, just, you know, playing baseball.

Having already spent my Tolkien-analogy capital a couple weeks ago, I’ll spare you the allusions to the Fellowship being broken and just say that Beyoncé shoots right to the top this week. The announcement of the Mrs. Carter Show World Tour met with a great deal of enthusiasm. The tour itself won’t be hitting North American shores until June, but fans are definitely ready to get their tickets early. Mrs. Carter will spend spring in Europe before arriving in the US and Canada this summer, then she heads to South America in the fall.

1D and Ms. Swift are left to pick up the pieces in the second and third spots. Houston and San Antonio once more trade rodeo rankings this week, with a stronger showing for the SA brand. Strange they haven’t figured out that they could both fit on the countdown at once. The Super Bowl’s last minute search surge earned it fifth place. The mid-game power surge is another story entirely.

The Somewhat Less Recent New Kids on The Block have risen from last place to lead off the bottom five. In doing so, this set of “classic” teen idols score a win over a more recent model. The esteemed Mr. Bieber took the shock from Beyoncé hard and ended up at #7 this week.

Has the top three landscape changed for good? Tune in next week to find out the exciting answer to that and other shocking questions, like: Will I mention Pink and if I do, will I spell her name with an exclamation point!?
