Yankees Drama Fans

Do Yankees fans love drama? No, not the interpersonal variety, the “legitimate theatre” version. The producing team behind Lombardi and Magic/Bird are hoping they do. They’ve got a new play in the works, this one about the team many love to malign, the New York Yankees.

Details, outside of “that’s the plan”, are non-existent. So there’s not much to to say about the odds Fran Kirmser and Tony Ponturo are right about their hunch. They feel the New York faithful will turn out for a “local” show about their team. Lucky thing Broadway is local.

The Yankees have been on Broadway before, so to speak. The musical Damn Yankees featured them as the titular antagonists to the Washington Senators. The Senators losing streak is interrupted when loyal fan Joe Boyd makes a deal with devil (literally) to become the slugger they need to make the pennant. The update to the tale of Faust ran for 1019 performances in its 1955 Broadway debut.

Want to see the Senators off stage? We can handle that.

The earliest the new Yankees play could hit theaters is late 2013. Until then, you can check out some of the touring shows of Lombardi. Well, you could do a lot of other stuff too, but, you know… sports-theatre wise.

The Week in TicketCity Search – Two-Thousand Thirteen Directions

TicketCity Week in Search

Week of
Apr. 16th
1 1 One Direction
2 2 Justin Bieber
3 3 Kentucky Derby
4 - Garth Brooks
5 - Jimmy Buffet
6 - Dallas Cowboys
7 4 Texas Rangers
8 - Houston Texans
9 7 Drake
10 - New York Yankees

Protip: the kids like the One Direction. They also like the Justin Bieber, just not quite as many of them at this point, it would seem. Mr. Bieber still has no concerts scheduled, while One Direction recently announced the follow-up to the tour they haven’t finished yet. The “2013 World Tour” will kick off less than 3 months after the “Up All Night Tour” ends in December of 2012.

The Derby and Oaks hang onto the #3 spot, keeping the top of the countdown the same this week. Things get mixed up pretty quickly after that. Garth Brooks returns as interest in his headlining gig at the Calgary Stampede lands him in the #4 spot. Jimmy Buffet is swinging by ACL Live at the Moody Theatre next month, and that’s probably why he appeared at #5 this week.

The bottom five reminds us that the NFL has returned at a slightly more normal time this season. You may recall last year the season almost didn’t happen, but this year the schedules have been posted and you can stock up on your favorite NFL team’s tickets a solid 4 months in advance of the preseason. The boys of summer aren’t left out either, as the Rangers hold steady at #8 and the Yankees peak in at #10 this week.

The Week in TicketCity Search – July 9th

The Lady ascends to the top spot, where she will probably remain for the rest of the month as her concert dates in central Texas rapidly approach. Still time to get your tickets for the shows Dallas and Houston. The esteemed Mr. Bieber has fallen to #2 and we’ll see how well he does the remainder of the year. He won’t be back to our little slice of Texas until next November.

The World Cup, fever for which has only managed to catapult it to #3, is nearly over. Take heart, though, if you’re looking for your soccer fix in slightly more accessible locations, you can always check out Manchester United touring the US for some friendly matches later this month.

Wicked tour in Houston remains popular, climbing up a spot as Aventura falls from the number 2 spot as their tour departs for more far off, exotic places… like East Rutherford, New Jersey. The Cirque events return this week after dropping out; demand certainly seems to be somewhat fickle for these shows. Michael Buble gains a few notches as he heads towards some central Texas dates in Houston, San Antonio, and Dallas.

That leaves the Yankees, who pop back in to the countdown instead of the Rays this week, and countdown favorites Tool and Phish, both of whom have a talent for appearing and disappearing week to week. This is an “appear” week, we will see what happens next week.

1 3 Lady Gaga
2 2 Justin Bieber
3 6 World Cup
4 5 Wicked
5 2 Aventura
6 - Cirque du Soleil
7 10 Michael Buble
8 - New York Yankees
9 - Tool
10 - Phish

Make-Up Taylor Swift Pic For Last Week

A slightly premature Happy Halloween to all.¬† The shakeups continue, though Taylor Swift retains her commanding lead at #1, Miley Cyrus exits the countdown completely for the first time in a long time. Replaced by? Bon Jovi. The veteran pop rockers have a new album, The Circle, releasing in November, and a new tour to support it. The Circle Tour doesn’t kick off until February 2010, but long time fans are looking to get their seats early.

Aventura remains a steady 3, while the announcement of a new Garth Brooks show in Vegas put him back on the radar after his “retirement”. Interest is running high for his opening shows, though the engagement is for five years, so I wouldn’t worry too much if you’re not able to get in for the first few months. Like many Vegas acts, Garth is going to be there a while.

The World Series clocks in at #6, though maybe I should have just combined the numbers for it and the Yankees down at #8. The Turnpike Series is now tied 1-1 heading into Game 3. Squeezed in between is Notre Dame, who’s about engage to in the “San Antonio Showdown” with rivals Washington State this weekend. Tickets are still available for that game.

1 1 Taylor Swift
2 - Bon Jovi
3 3 Aventura
4 - Garth Brooks
5 8 Disney On Ice
6 - World Series
7 - Norte Dame
8 5 NY Yankees
9 7 U2
10 - Phish

2009 World Series Set

After Saturday’s rain cancellation, ALCS Game 6 moved to Sunday and the Yankees subsequently moved into the World Series after ending the Angels’ run. They will meet returning champs the Phillies, who took out the Dodgers in the NLCS. The prospect of a “freeway series” out in LA was not to be.

There’s less than 100 miles between Philly and New York, though, so the freeway ride may be longer, but it’s possible for enterprising fans to see all the games in both Yankee Stadium and Citizens Bank Park.
