USA vs Jamaica Challenge Series set for 2010

Striking while the iron is still hot from the 2008 Beijing Olympics; USA Track & Field and the Jamaica Amateur Athletic Association have agreed to a duel meet.  The USA vs Jamaica Challenge will feature the best male & female track athletes competing in a series of sprints and other track events.

The events included in the Jamaica vs USA Challenge:
* 100 meter sprint
* 200 meter sprint
* 400 meter race
* 110 meter hurdles
* 400 meter hurdles
* Long jump
* 4 x 100 meter relay
* 4 x 400 meter relay

Each event will include both the men’s and women’s version.  At the 2008 Beijing Olympics the two teams (USA & Jamaica) combined to win the vast majority of medals in these competitions.

The exact date and location of the USA vs Jamaica Challenge is not set, but will be sometime in Spring/Summer of 2010.  Some of the biggest stars in track & field will likely compete in this event, including international superstar Usain Bolt (Jamaica) who dominated the 100 & 200 sprints at the recent Olympics.

This event should serve to keep the interest of the general viewing public on track & field until the next Olympic Games, which are the 2012 London Olympics.

How Obama Could Upset Tokyo’s Olympic Bid

There is already talk that our 44th President of the United States could swing IOC votes in favor of a Chicago Olympic games in 2016.

After enjoying a landslide victory in yesterday’s U.S. elections, the eyes of the world are focused on Obama – and consequently – on Chicago.  The nation and the world got its glimpse at the beauty of Chicago’s Grant Park on Tuesday night during the election rally, and the city is hoping to capitalize on the publicity to swing international attention their way.

Currently, there are four cities that are bidding to host the 2016 Summer Olympics.  Tokyo, Japan is one of the most prominent bidders, and Olympic Committee board members have already voiced concern over their chances to take the Olympic vote.

“Mr. Obama is popular and good at speeches, so things could get tough for Japan,” said Tomiaki Fukuda, a senior Japanese Olympic Committee board member.

Obama, an avid sports fan, proud Chicago resident and international global figure, could factor into the IOC vote for the 2016 Summer Olympics bid.  Obama is expected to attend the IOC session in Copenhagen, Germany next year.

Obama drew a crowd of 200,000 in Berlin in July.  This leads some to conclude that the Copenhagen vote could be swayed by his popularity.

“We saw the crowd he drew in Berlin, and he will remain in the glow of an historic election triumph when he asks for IOC votes,” said Allen Sanderson, a professor of sports economics at the University of Chicago.

Xiang vs. Robles, Beijing 2008

A rivalry is heating up prior to Beijing this summer, the destination for Olympians worldwide.  China’s track and field prodigy Liu Xiang, 24, is hoping to make up some ground in the 110-metre hurdles after his 2006 world record was toppled by Cuba’s Dayron Robles on June 12.  Robles, 21, edged past Xiang’s time of 12.88 seconds with a time of 12.87, setting the new world record for the event in Ostrava, Czech Republic.

“It’s such a good time; I wasn’t expecting that. Wow! I do not know if I can beat Liu Xiang in Beijing now. But we will see,” said Robles, a little winded and astounded at his own feat.

And we will see.

Robles, who is slightly younger than Xiang, must prove his recent wins in Germany and the Czech Republic in August.  Xiang, who is heralded as the contender to beat in this year’s event, will have a home court advantage.

Only the best competitor of the two will walk away with hurdles gold at the Beijing National Stadium.  Luckily, we have your track and field tickets right here at TicketCity.  You can witness both superstars vying for worldwide recognition, as the 110-metre hurdles gears up August 18.  As you and I both know, there is little doubt both contenders will be fighting it out late, so grab some tix to the finals on August 21.
