The 2014 Outback Bowl — Preview, Tickets and More

The Outback Bowl has two iconic college football schools participating this year as the LSU Tigers will face the Iowa Hawkeyes on January 1st at Raymond James Stadium. LSU finished the season at 9-3, with key victories over Auburn, Texas A&M and Arkansas. Iowa is at 8-4, and their biggest wins over the season came over Iowa State, Michigan and Nebraska. It was a tough Big Ten schedule for the Hawkeyes, as they finished 4-1 in the Legends division but drew games against the top two teams in the Leaders division as well.

LSU will be without their star QB Zach Mettenberger for the game, as the team leader went down with a torn ACL that ended his college football career. It’s a big loss for the Tigers, but Anthony Jenkins is a duel-threat quarterback that could give Iowa all kinds of problems as well. The loss of Mettenberger also puts more weight on the shoulders of running back Jeremy Hill, who has 1185 yards and 14 touchdowns so far this season.

On the flip side, Jake Rudock has beed solid for an Iowa team that thought it might have some struggles at the QB position. The sophomore has 2281 yards and 18 touchdowns and has exceeded expectations. Both teams have a solid defense, and especially with Mettenberger out, this game could turn out to be dominated by the defenses.

8 - Luke Bryan

10 8 Orange Bowl

I’d wax poetic about that candle-burning-brightly-but-not-lasting-long thing, but I can’t remember the quote exactly. Meh, that was inspiring enough, right? The candle in this horribly wounded metaphor is bowl game listings on the top ten in this very blog post. Not completely spent, but certainly not the force they were last week. There are only four bowls left, with the BCS the best placing at #4.

The brighter flames on the countdown are the ones we may be seeing vying for the top spot for months to come. This week it’s Taylor Swift, so girl power gets the drop on the Y-chromosome set.

Moving to the bottom five, Cowboys fans are looking to see those last few games, as the Boys have a chance to reach the postseason. They’re followed by Bon Jovi, who will need to bring their a-game if they plan to crack the top 3. Like the other contenders, Bon Jovi will be on the road this spring, touring in support of their to-be-released album, What About Now.

Luke Bryan rounds things out on the concert side, while the Outback Bowl squeezes in an appearance for the season, and the Orange Bowl drops two spots to last place this week.

Week of

9 Sugar Bowl
10 9 Eric Clapton

The bowls certainly arrived this week. Pretty close to a clean sweep of the top 10, though a few tenacious concert performers hung on. On top, not particularly surprising, is the National Championship. The power of the first Fighting Irish national championship game in a long time easily overcame the other challengers. The Cotton Bowl arrives in second place, and 1D drops to #3. I’m sure if there was a Teen Heartthrob Bowl, they would be a shoe-in to win.

The Fiesta and Outback Bowls round out the top five. Noticeable due to its absence, the Rose Bowl is the only BCS match-up that didn’t make the Top 10. Judging by where it ended up on the full list, the Rose Bowl had about the same chance to make the Top 10 as Justin Beiber has to win a Grammy next year.

Taylor Swift leads off the bottom five. She’s been a solid, consistent presence on the countdown despite the fact that her Red Tour doesn’t even start until next spring. We will see if she can hold onto that boy-band-like momentum all the way through. Hanging in for another week, Clapton adds the punctuation to the list. Like Ms Swift, he won’t be on stages until March, but that’s not slowing him down at the moment.
