The Week in TicketCity Search – Jan 29th

Big shift this week, as sport once again claims the top 2 spots. Granted, it took 2 of the biggest sporting events of the year to dethrone concerts. The Super Bowl is a natural for #1, and will probably be there next week as well. Interest in the Winter Games is also reaching an all time high. The games are, comparatively speaking, conveniently located to the United States this year, so getting there won’t be quite as big an issue as it can be depending on the host country.

Lady Gaga fans seem to have cooled a bit. While she manages to cling to the countdown just barely, it’s a far cry from her weeks of dominance. I sense she’ll be back up top fairly quickly, though, much like Taylor Swift recovered pretty quickly from a drop to #8 last week to lead the crop of concert performers that round out the Top 5, the esteemed Mr. Bieber among them.

I realize I can’t remember if John Mayer has been on the list or not before, as I’ve done quite a few of these. Someone who I’m certain has not is the #6 entrant, James Taylor. This may also be the first time someone whose albums I’ve actually bought showed up on the countdown. James is playing some dates in May and June of this year.

The harder it is to see the trophy,
the more valuable it is. Right?

With the bowl season over and the NFL playoffs still in early stages, this week concerts once again floated to the top. Lead by Lady Gaga, whose Monster Ball Tour will mean she is a fixture of the list for months to come, concerts dominate the top 3. Taylor Swift and Miley Cyrus, also fixtures on the list, show no signs of slowing as they both climb significantly this week. The distinguished Mr. Bieber, whose meteoric rise to fame has yet to cool down, takes the #2 spot. As mentioned earlier this week, it was announced he will be closing out the Houston Rodeo. It has been explained to me that this is a big deal. I smiled and nodded.

Carrie Underwood returns this week, having released her latest album, Play On, in November. The former American Idol’s 2010 Tour is set to kick off in March. Though I don’t think her music will be blasting on SUNDAY! SUNDAY! SUNDAY! when the rather large, some might say ‘monstrous’, trucks of Monster Jam arrive at an arena near you this coming spring.

Finally the NFL does take a peek into the countdown, as Wild Card winners the Cowboys and the Saints show up in the bottom 5 in advance of their Divisional championship games this weekend. The big game itself appears at #10.

The Week in TicketCity Search – January 8th

Welcome back to the first update for 2010. I was not available to make these highly trafficked updates the past couple Fridays as I was on vacation, where, I’m proud to say, my major accomplishment was catching up with the Doctor on BBC America. Not surprisingly, the National Championship wins the week easily. Of course, the outcome of the game left the office a bit morose, so perhaps it’s best it probably won’t be around next week.

While 2010′s college football championship is now in the record books, the NFL gearing up to keep football fans attention for the rest of the month with their playoffs. Interest in brackets is high, as traffic to the bracket posts on this blog fitfully illustrates. While we haven’t, as a rule, posted those brackets to the the actual TicketCity website, I think will go ahead and put a version up there, as there seems to be some interest, entering the countdown at #2.

The remainder of the list is getting back to “normal,” with Miley Cyrus returning to join Taylor Swift and latest list mainstay Lady Gaga. Justin Bieber is still hot, and has added some dates in February and March. After a long absence Lil Wayne returns. He is still working on a forthcoming rock album, Rebirth, now scheduled for release in February, 2010.

Colt McCoy

Two weeks out from the Bowl announcements sees the National Championship take over the top spot on the countdown handily. Last week’s champ the Rose Bowl tumbled all the way down to #7. Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber make for an odd combination at number 2 and 3, but certainly exemplify the tenacity of pop music fans in the face of college football’s most popular events. Taylor Swift remains in the top 5 as well, just below the Cotton Bowl, the only other top 5 Bowl.

The Bottom five is dominated by Bowls, all holdovers from last week with the exception of the Independence Bowl, which slides into the countdown as the Alamo Bowl slides out.

That brings us to this weeks’ newcomer, “Muse.” I’m guessing people aren’t searching for a Grace Jones album, an episode of Star Trek: Voyager, or the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer… but a British alt rock band from Devon, England. Muse’s latest album, The Resistance, was released September 15th in the US. That concludes this week’s “fun with Wikipedia’s disambiguation page”.

The Week in TicketCity Search – December 11th

Hey, looks like that whole Bowl announcement thing happened last Sunday. This week’s top 10 has a certain college football postseason flavor to it as a result. Concerts were not to be completely denied, though. Apparently Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga make for a potent combination, and they managed to hang on to spots in the top 5. The Rose Bowl took the top slot, followed by the Cotton Bowl at #3 and the National Championship Game at #5. The Sugar, Gator, and Alamo Bowls round our little top-bowls-within-the-top-10-list list.

A Brief Guide To Football

Perhaps illustrative of the “unique” take of American sports fans, another big “football” announcement happened the Friday before the bowl games were set. That was the World Cup draw, which shows up at #9 on the list. While the World Cup demands the attention of most of the world, it doesn’t generate quite the same amount of attention State-side, especially against our home grown flavor of football.

Finally, it appears Nick Jonas has a “side project” band, which explains why people are now searching for him and not the band with whom he is most notably associated. I had no desire to know any of that, but I looked it up anyway.
