8 - Big Ten Tournament
9 - SEC Tournament
10 - Miami Heat

As college basketball fans get ready to fire up their brackets, there’s still the matter of determining out who will populate them. The conference tournaments are in full swing, and figure heavily this week. Holding over from last week, we have the Big 12 and the Big East, both showing some positive movement. The Big Ten and the SEC enter the countdown in the bottom five. There’s still time to get some conference tournament championship tickets, if you want to see your top pick lock down their seed in person.

While popular, the conference tournaments didn’t exactly crowd into the top five. Raidohead walked away with a strong victory, followed by Big Time Rush, making for an odd musical pairing at the top of the countdown. The Houston Rodeo is in full swing. It lost a couple spots this week, but still turns in a strong showing. Lots of big acts coming up next week at Reliant Stadium.

The bottom five is almost all basketball, and hawk-eyed Beiber fans, checking back to see when new concert dates arrive. Not quite yet, I’m afraid. The Heat return to the countdown, reminding us that professional basketball is still rather popular even as the collegiate flavor steals the spotlight a bit.

4 - One Direction
5 - Radiohead
6 10 SEC Tournament
7 2 Drake
8 Big 12 Tournament
9 6 Justin Bieber
10 - Big East Tournament

Linsanity has abated, allowing room for the prelude to March Madness to begin. Three big conference tournaments show up on the list this week, though none managed to crack the top 5. Madonna surged back to the #1 spot after falling to #3 last week. She’s followed by the Houston Rodeo, which features a big line of top concert stars this year, including the group in this week’s #3 spot, Big Time Rush.

Since the Nickelodeon’s boys aren’t rushing anywhere else in Texas until July, I have to guess it’s because of their Houston Rodeo show. It’s a banner week for boy bands, as Big Time Rush is followed closely by One Direction. One Direction is a boy band from the UK who achieved some notoriety on the original UK version of The X Factor. At the moment, One Direction fans are just as disappointed as the ones for #9 on the list, as we don’t have anything for them right now.

Radiohead rounds out the top 5, ushering in the basketball heavy bottom 5. The SEC wins the battle of the conference tournaments, followed by the Big 12 and the Big East clings to the bottom of the countdown at #10. The tourneys get underway next week, so expect to see strong showings for all of them on the next countdown.

Week of
Jan. 16th
1 1 Drake
2 3 Super Bowl
3 9 Tool
4 5 Miami Heat
5 - Vanderbilt Basketball
6 10 Radiohead
7 - Coldplay
8 - Red Hot Chili Peppers
9 - Harlem Globetrotters
10 2 Van Halen

Drake extends his stay at #1 for a second week running. Even the Super Bowl couldn’t topple him, though the results were close. The Big Game did gain one spot over last week, opening up the #3 spot for Tool, who shot up from the #9 spot.

Basketball rounds out the top five, pro and college. The Heat have been on the countdown pretty steadily since the NBA season returned. The Vanderbilt hoops squad is a newcomer, but college basketball’s season of madness isn’t all that far away, so expect more to come.

Radiohead kicks off the bottom five with a big gain from #10 last week. Coldplay follows, having been spotty on the countdown of late. A fate similar to the Chili Peppers, who were strong but lost some momentum when their tour suffered a delay. They’re back this week as the new tour dates get closer.

Van Halen’s surge quickly lost steam, falling to #10 this week after nearly conquering the countdown last week. They’ve got a few weeks to get back to the top before the new tour begins.

Week of
Jan. 9th
1 5 Drake
2 1 Van Halen
3 9 Super Bowl
4 - Jason Aldean
5 4 Miami Heat
6 - Houston Rodeo
7 8 Monster Jam
8 - Justin Bieber
9 7 Tool
10 - Radiohead

Concerts have the upper hand this week, with a 6-4 edge. It’s really 7-3, since the Houston Rodeo makes it to the list on the strength of their concert line-up this year, which features Lady Antebellum, John Legend, ZZ Top, Train, and Alan Jackson, among many others. At the top is Drake, who enjoys a strong jump from the fifth spot last week. He dethrones Van Halen, though they were a close #2.

The Super Bowl surges back to the third spot, followed by country sensation Jason Aldean. Aldean is on tour and will be stopping by the Houston Rodeo as well. The Heat round out the top 5 after a single digit loss.

In the bottom five we find monster trucks and Justin Beiber, who returns after a longer than usual absence. No new tour has been announced, but he is apparently working on a new album (Believe), so a new tour will likely not be far behind.

Rounding things out Tool slip a couple spots to #9 while Radiohead appears at #10. They’ll be in the US for just over a month, so don’t wait to get your tickets.

Back to fill in another missing week. The conference championships have rocketed to the top in the past few days. The SEC won by a wide margin, but the volume on the ACC wasn’t too shabby. The Big Ten finds itself a little further down the list. Hard to say if the absence of the newly minted Pac-12 Championship has anything to do with their decision to keep everyone guessing on where it would be held until the last minute.

This is “announcement weekend,” so expect to see a lot of bowls on next week’s list. The BCS, fittingly, has been around for a few weeks now, and was joined this week by the Music City Bowl. Not one I’d have expected early buzz for, but we can certainly accommodate.

Rounding out the list we see Kentucky’s basketball team is getting some interest. With the almost-certain news the NBA lockout is over, we will see if the search momentum shifts to the pros over college teams. The revised NBA schedule isn’t out yet, but we’ll have listings once it’s officially announced.
