The Week in TicketCity Search – August 20th

All the power of football season can’t keep the esteemed Mr. Beiber down for long. He returns to the top spot, followed by three of the biggest teams in pro and college football, including the Fighting Irish, who appear for the first time this season. The Buckeyes and Cowboys hang around from last week. Finally the Jonas Brothers make a strong show at #5. Their current tour is scheduled to hit Texas in mid-September so fans are doing some, well, second-to-last-minute shopping.

The Longhorns, who didn’t make the cut last week, show up again this week to kick off the bottom five. Similarly, Phish pops in randomly again, as they have been over the past few months, never hanging around for much more than a week. Rush drops to #8 from #4, hanging in for a 3rd week on the countdown. The fact that Lady Gaga is legging her way through Canada may be the reason she’s also tumbled from her customary spot in the top 3.

Finally we have our little local music show appearing at #10. According to the clock on the wall we’re about a month and a half out from this year’s festival, so not surprising to see interest start to bubble up. I’m sure it will be a common sight in the coming weeks. This year’s headliners include The Eagles, Muse, and M.I.A. Oh, and Phish, too. Maybe that’s why they keep popping up.

The Week in TicketCity Search – August 13th

Happy Friday the 13th. Another football season it upon us, it appears. Not only have over half of last week’s countdown entries been completely replaced, many have been replaced with football teams of both national league and national collegiate athletic stripe. What has not changed, at all, is the top 3, which is something of a rarity week-to-week. The Boys are still on top, if only by a hair this time, followed by recent long running favorites the esteemed Mr. Bieber and Lady Gaga.

Rush manages to avoid the cut by jumping up a few spots to #4, but after that, it’s all “new” faces, some a bit newer than others. Drake returns to the countdown after an absence to round out the top 5. He’s followed by some powerhouse college football, as Buckeyes and Razorbacks fans are obviously ready for the season to begin.

That brings us to a countdown newcomer, and first “animated” countdown entrant, the Gorillaz. If that doesn’t make any sense to you, just look them up on Wikipedia. While I don’t recommend Wikipedia for tips on open heart surgery, it’s gangbusters at explaining how the front man for the band Blur hooked up with one of the creators of the comic Tank Girl (she has a tank) to create a “virtual band”. Then you can marvel at the fact the fictional biographies of each individual band member are larger than those of many prominent historical figures.

The Saints squeeze in between the other countdown newcomer, Maroon 5. The LA based rock band is releasing a new album, Hands All Over, next month, and touring to promote the release.

This is certainly an interesting week. Over half the countdown wasn’t there last week, and, first and foremost, the top entry doesn’t sing. While the 1985 Chicago Bears proved it’s not out of the question for a football team to release a hit single, it does remain highly unlikely. The Cowboys reach the top of the countdown as we’re about a week away from their first preseason game. This shuffles our usual suspects down a couple spots.

Paramore appears out of nowhere to romance the #4 spot. That was kind of punny… I apologize… especially since they don’t even spell it that way. Paramore is a alt rock band fronted by Hayley Williams out of Franklin, Tennessee. They are the headliners of the 2010 Honda Civic Tour, which this year includes Tegan and Sara and New Found Glory.

Rounding out the top 5 is the Longhorns, also rapidly approaching their season kickoff. The bottom five is an interesting assortment, leading off with comedian Kathy Griffin, followed by Rush and a returning KISS, who have been absent for a while. Pretty sure that this is Bob Dylan’s first time on the countdown, and I’ll forgo explaining who he is. Dylan’s consummate artistry is in excellent company as the live tour of So You Think You Can Dance finishes out the countdown.

The Week in TicketCity Search – July 23rd

The Dave Matthews Band shoots to top 3 out of nowhere, knocking out Cirque, who falls down to #7. Gaga climbs up a spot but still isn’t able to knock the esteemed Mr. Bieber off the top. The WWE remains solid at #4 as their Texas dates draw closer; we will probably be seeing more of them for at least another couple of weeks.

The Man U tour in the states rounds out the top 5. Their match against the Kansas City Wizards is this Sunday, and the tour wraps up with the big game against the MLS All-Stars next Wednesday in Houston. Don’t let World Cup fatigue get to you, there’s still time to get tickets for both and catch this unique experience.

Wicked boomerangs back into the countdown once more, leading off the bottom five, where we find Cirque and the Longhorns, who drop a couple spots from their #6 debut last week. Rush peeks in at nine, leading us to the first complete newcomer to the countdown we’ve had in a long time. To Wikipedia!

Trey Songz is an R&B/soul singer from Petersburg, VA, which is a few miles south of my own hometown, Richmond. He first released material under the alias “Prince of Virginia,” which is interesting, because I wasn’t even aware the position had been filled. Since I moved I just haven’t been keeping up with news out of my native commonwealth. Mr. Songz is prepping for the release of his latest album Passion, Pain & Pleasure on September 14th, and is embarking on the Passion, Pain & Pleasure Tour to promote it.

The Week in TicketCity Search – July 2nd

The concert performers have mostly returned to the top 5. Sure, Wicked popped back into the number five spot, but that’s close enough for me. The Esteemed Mr. Bieber retakes the top spot from Tool, who, as expected, are nowhere to be found after their tour departed central Texas. Likewise, Aventura’s leg through Central Texas is also in full swing, and their second place showing is a direct result. Lady Gaga isn’t scheduled to show up around here for a few weeks but she’s already firmly back in the top 3.

New to the countdown is Eminem, who’s recently released album Recovery is a bright spot for the plastic disc industry, appears at #4. This is his first showing on the countdown. Having been off the touring circuit for a while, it seems fans are hungry for some live shows. Only two have been announced so far, both in September and both in stadiums: Commerica Park and Yankee Stadium.

Rounding out the bottom of the countdown are some returning faces and the World Cup, which continues without the US team. Dave Matthews, Rush, and Michael Buble, all return, while the Rays remain steady at #9 for reasons unknown to me.
