The Week in TicketCity Search – Sept. 17th

Call it the revenge of the concert performers? Perhaps just that the buzz of football season openers have given way to the more reserved regular season. Either way, football teams have drifted off the list this week, replaced by a varied selection of performing artists. We also have our first tie in countdown history, at #1 no less. Since Phish are performing at ACL, it’s even more interesting. I can’t really count them as the same, since Phish are on tour and it’s not necessarily people looking for their gig at ACL.

Either way, our little local festival and Phish have successfully knocked the esteemed Mr. Bieber down. He’s joined by Jay-Z, who, along with Eminem two spots down, got a boost from their Home & Home Tour. Those shows have past, but they’ll be on tour again, I’m sure.

Football wasn’t completely banished from the list. The usual suspects, Longhorns and Cowboys, remain, at 5 and 7 respectively. They weren’t the only sporting contests on the countdown though. Thanks to a large local show, the UFC charted for what may have been the first time in countdown history.

The Week in TicketCity Search – September 10th

You may not have noticed, but I didn’t post this last Friday. So today we have two lists. Exciting, I know, so let’s dive right in.

Football season gets into full swing with both regular season NFL and NCAA games. That means our usual concert heavy list has been taken over by large men with shoulder pads. If this was the 80′s, then most of the female concert performers would at least have those in common with the football players. For two weeks in a row our local football team has topped the list, dethroning the esteemed Mr. Bieber. Yes, he may have 3% of Twitter’s entire network capacity devoted to him, but even he can’t stay on top in the first month of football season.

Still ongoing, the US Open mills about in the middle of the list. While the Dallas Cowboys are the only NFL team with enough juice to make and remain on the list in the midst of high levels of college football interest. Of the college football teams that find favor, no surprise that schools from the SEC and Big 12 are heavily represented.

The concert performers that mange to fill in the cracks between football teams have been bouncing around quite a bit the past few weeks. Last week, Eminem managed to find a spot in the lower 5, while this week 3 bands that constantly warp in and out of the list appear once more, Dave Matthews Band, Phish, and Rush.

The countdown is certainly seeing a lot of movement over the past month. Another week where only the top 5 sees any survivors from the previous week. In a return to form, concert performers regain all top 3 spots, with Rush bouncing back to #2 and Lady Gaga recovering from her fall to regain the #3 slot. That leaves local favorite the Longhorns to take #4 as the only college team to return from the previous week.

Rounding out the week’s top five is Jersey Boys, in a rare appearance from a Broadway show that isn’t Wicked. Likely this is because a touring production of the show is currently playing in our home town of Austin over at Bass Concert Hall. I’ve helpfully linked our local page in the top 10 list so only Austin Jersey Boys shows will appear. Feel free to take a break from football fever and take in a little of the legitimate theatre.

The Razorbacks lead off the bottom 5, in a light week for college football. Drake appears again, after disappearing the previous week. At this point I’m just wishing Drake fans would develop some consistency. Dave Matthews and his eponymous Band appear at #8, joining Kiss in a block of performers who commonly appear and disappear in the rankings.

Finally, the US Open appears on the radar as we near the first serve of the 2010 tournament, now down a Serena Williams. It’s a long tournament, so ample time to get some choice seats to all the action at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

The Week in TicketCity Search – August 20th

All the power of football season can’t keep the esteemed Mr. Beiber down for long. He returns to the top spot, followed by three of the biggest teams in pro and college football, including the Fighting Irish, who appear for the first time this season. The Buckeyes and Cowboys hang around from last week. Finally the Jonas Brothers make a strong show at #5. Their current tour is scheduled to hit Texas in mid-September so fans are doing some, well, second-to-last-minute shopping.

The Longhorns, who didn’t make the cut last week, show up again this week to kick off the bottom five. Similarly, Phish pops in randomly again, as they have been over the past few months, never hanging around for much more than a week. Rush drops to #8 from #4, hanging in for a 3rd week on the countdown. The fact that Lady Gaga is legging her way through Canada may be the reason she’s also tumbled from her customary spot in the top 3.

Finally we have our little local music show appearing at #10. According to the clock on the wall we’re about a month and a half out from this year’s festival, so not surprising to see interest start to bubble up. I’m sure it will be a common sight in the coming weeks. This year’s headliners include The Eagles, Muse, and M.I.A. Oh, and Phish, too. Maybe that’s why they keep popping up.

The Week in TicketCity Search – August 13th

Happy Friday the 13th. Another football season it upon us, it appears. Not only have over half of last week’s countdown entries been completely replaced, many have been replaced with football teams of both national league and national collegiate athletic stripe. What has not changed, at all, is the top 3, which is something of a rarity week-to-week. The Boys are still on top, if only by a hair this time, followed by recent long running favorites the esteemed Mr. Bieber and Lady Gaga.

Rush manages to avoid the cut by jumping up a few spots to #4, but after that, it’s all “new” faces, some a bit newer than others. Drake returns to the countdown after an absence to round out the top 5. He’s followed by some powerhouse college football, as Buckeyes and Razorbacks fans are obviously ready for the season to begin.

That brings us to a countdown newcomer, and first “animated” countdown entrant, the Gorillaz. If that doesn’t make any sense to you, just look them up on Wikipedia. While I don’t recommend Wikipedia for tips on open heart surgery, it’s gangbusters at explaining how the front man for the band Blur hooked up with one of the creators of the comic Tank Girl (she has a tank) to create a “virtual band”. Then you can marvel at the fact the fictional biographies of each individual band member are larger than those of many prominent historical figures.

The Saints squeeze in between the other countdown newcomer, Maroon 5. The LA based rock band is releasing a new album, Hands All Over, next month, and touring to promote the release.
