Starting off 2012 with a fresh list. A list that shows thoughts of football fans turning back to the pros as bowl season comes to a close. Not to say there’s not a little steam left in that engine. The Cotton Bowl makes a strong showing at #2 and the big rematch finds its way to #6.

The pros take the top spot, as the Texas make their debut appearance in the post season. Houston fans are lining up to see the Wildcard game against the Bengals on home turf in Reliant Stadium. Saints fans are little more accustomed to post-season play, but that doesn’t dampen their enthusiasm, pushing the team to #3 on the list. The big game itself makes it to #5, and Giants fans can be content with #7.

The NBA’s Heat check in #4 while the bottom of the countdown sees a tidy cluster of concert performers. Leading off the pack is Tool, on tour this winter with the possibility of a new album arriving this year. The Red Hot Chili Peppers return as do Coldplay, both seeing a lot of interest in their tours. It’s a little cold out there these days, so catching a concert inside a nice warm venue is a great way to keep warm.

The Super Bowl remains on top. I think that’s the one they show when the Puppy Bowl is on Animal Planet. New to the countdown and clocking in at the #2 spot is Katy Perry. While experiencing quite a bit of success over the past year or so, she’s been absent from the countdown because she hasn’t been on tour since fall of 2009. The California Dream Tour will run this month through November, so Miss Perry may be hanging around for much of the year to make up for that lost time.

Lil Wayne drops one spot to #3 and Chis Cornell returns to the countdown at the 4 spot. The former(ish) Soundgarden lead vocalist is playing the Paramount Theatre here in Austin on April 1st. I doubt that’s going to be a joke, so go ahead and order tickets.

Countdown mainstay Taylor Swift returns to the #5, and is joined by Lady Gaga, who climbs to #6 from #10. Gaga will be in central Texas in mid-March, which is already a hot ticket, and only promises to become a bit more toasty as the shows draw closer.

The remainder of the countdown is some shuffling, with Janet Jackson, Jason Aldean, and Monster Jam all giving up positions, and Linkin Park returning after a very brief absence. Linkin Park’s run through Texas is a lot closer, with dates in Houston and Dallas in mid February.

The Bowl of all Bowls remains at the top this week, and the sky remains blue, grass green. The Pro Bowl moved up the list, but couldn’t quite make it to the number 2 spot. That got taken by chart newcomer Lil Wayne, who has very recently announced the “I Am Music II” Tour. So recently, in fact, that there’s no inventory available for any of the shows as of yet. That will likely change pretty quickly. It appears he has a very busy schedule for the spring tour.

Rush fans return the prog-rock trio to the number four spot this week. They’re followed by Janet Jackson, who slips a bit from 3 to 5.

Starting off the bottom five is the Coachella Music Festival. This year’s festival is headlined by Kings of Leon, Arcade Fire, The Strokes, and the ever humble, man of the people Kanye West. The festival happens April 15-17, in the middle of the Empire Polo Fields, which are over this hedge.

Rounding out the list Jason Aldean, Monster Jam, and Dayglow (an eclectic mix if I ever saw one) shuffle around a bit. Gaga shows up again at #10 as her new round of stateside dates draws ever closer.

Many changes this week as we finally cast off the last remnants of college bowl season and see a couple new faces in concerts. Naturally the Super Bowl remains at #1. The tantalizing prospects of some pretty interesting matchups are fueling some higher interest here than usual. Nothing is set in stone yet, but we will know this weekend. While on the subject of football, the Pro Bowl worked its way in near the bottom of the list.

Taylor Swift graciously gave the Pro Bowl her #9 spot, trading it for #2 this week. She’s followed by list newcomer Janet Jackson. Miss Jackson isn’t a newcomer to the music scene, though. The 2011 tour she’s gearing up for, Number Ones: Up Close and Personal, is based on her visiting 35 cities to sing her 35 #1 hits. That is a reasonably large number of #1 hits.

Janet is followed by the second newcomer to the list, “Dayglow.” The Dayglow Tour, billed as the “World’s Largest Paint Party”, is where people younger and more attractive than myself go to dance and squirt one-another with neon black-light paint. If you get the VIP package, you get a free bottle of paint… so, yeah, there’s that, too.

The rest of the list is mostly just some of the usual suspects popping back in for a visit. Jason Aldean, Kid Rock, some dude named Bieber, all dropping by for a little extra face time.
