Football cleans up easily this week. Securing the top 3 spots and 70% of the countdown real estate, it certainly seems things are well underway. Both regular season NFL and college games have officially begun, and our top 2 have officially been unchanged for a month now. Things did wobble a bit this week, as the Cowboy faithful push The Boys to #3.

During a tough week, Kevin Hart turned in an impressive showing to land in the #4 spot, beating even One Direction, who fell to #7. Interestingly, both were at the VMA’s this week, with Hart hosting and 1D performing. The UK boy band took home a few spacemen in the process. One of them commented they’d “grown up watching this show.” Now I feel old, thanks. Hart will be back on the road soon after the VMA gig, starting later this month in Indianapolis.

Staggering in a little late to the party is the US Open, which is quite nearly over. The championships will all be played this weekend, barring weather of the inclement variety. The Open had been ongoing for over a week now, but hadn’t cracked the top 10. News that this would be former Open champion’s Andy Roddick’s final tournament before retiring may have helped boost interest.

ACL hangs onto the top of the list this week, on the strength of last weekend alone. The festival will likely pass out of the countdown next week. Lots of the TicketCity crew attended with rave reviews all around. I have it on good authority there were more than a few members of the team at the #3 event on the countdown this week as well.

Journey’s show last night at the Frank Erwin Center likely caused their surge to the top three this week. Fear not if you missed them, they’ll be hanging around Texas this weekend, playing shows in Dallas and Woodlands.

College football remains the biggest force on the countdown once more this week, though concert performers are creeping back to the top as the fever pitch of the early season dies down a bit. The Cowboys likewise remain steady at #6.

Taylor Swift couldn’t hold on this week, leaving the countdown for the first time in quite a while. She gives up her seat to previous countdown stalwart, Adele, who returns in that #9 spot.

Winner this week is no surprise. The 2011 ACL Festival should be getting underway as I type this. Temperature wise it appears it will merely be in the mid 90s, so positively chilly compared to the temperatures Austin has seen for the past few months. Should be quite agreeable by the time headliners like Kanye West, Coldplay, Stevie Wonder, and Arcade Fire hit the big stages in the evening. Still have passes available for anyone who wants to get in.

The reminder of the countdown isn’t all that surprising either, as we find another week of college football goodness. The Aggies are the team of choice this week, as they hang onto the #2 spot. Mississippi State, Texas, and LSU follow after. Texas is the only one of the bunch that moved since last week, having given up the #1 spot to ACL. Before more CFB, the NFL makes an appearance at #6 with the Cowboys.

Arkansas and Alabama provide some more countdown love for the SEC, followed by the other concert performers that managed to hang on. Taylor Swift clings to the #9 spot, and, yes, the esteemed Mr. Bieber returns to us this week. He’d been pushed out last week, the first one in quite a while he’d missed, but that wasn’t destined to last long. We will see how long it takes him to get back to the #1 spot.

Well, after a little time off, I’ve returned to find college football season has started. Yes, the weeks around the September kick-off are some of the few that find the countdown devoted so completely to sports. Can’t quite squeeze everyone with a microphone out, though. The resilient Miss Swift has held on both weeks, tenaciously clinging to the countdown.

Football isn’t the only sport that’s not only held on, but clung to the top five. That would be the US Open, tennis flavor, ongoing for the past couple weeks up in lovely Flushing, NY. Thanks to some rain outs, there’s still a lot of tennis to see. The tournament will run through next Monday, the 12th.

Another favorite shows up this week, ACL Fest. We’re just a week away from the 2011 festival. Since it seems the local climate remembered it doesn’t have to have three digit temperatures all the time, things are shaping up for a fine few days out at Zilker Park.

The Hokies, out of nowhere, take the top spot this week. Fun fact: my dad was a “Hokie.” While I did not follow in his footsteps, it did make getting an acceptance letter from Tech pretty easy. They are followed by one of the usual suspects this time of year, the Longhorns, who hold onto the number #2 spot this week. We find the esteemed Mr. Bieber in the countdown at #3, followed by a newcomer to the countdown who posted a similar “out of nowhere” performance.

Mindless Behavior is a boy band, or so Wikipeida tells me. Doesn’t tell me much more than that. I guess they’re not quite Menudo, NKOTB, or ‘N Sync yet. They have an album, the charmingly titled #1 Girl, and have been the opening act on Janet Jackson’s recent greatest hits tour.

The reminder of the countdown is far more conservative. While the schools change, college football is a constant, as are the Cowboys, as this the point in the season where optimism abounds.

ACL Fest returns to the countdown. The festival kicks off September 16th, so we’re only three weeks away now. Be sure to stay cool out there, as the forecast is for more of the same toasty temps from the past few months. Better than rain, at least.
