It would seem the Beliebers have given up. I confess to a bit of disappointment, as a solid battle for the top spot makes things a bit more interesting. On the other hand, there was a surprise #2 this week, so the war for pop supremacy can take a break. Dave Chappelle’s unexpected mid-week show in Austin catapulted him to second place on the strength of a very short window of searches. That show ended up in a bit of headline-making controversy.

Coldplay and the Texas Rangers round out the top 5. Coldplay sat at #4 for three weeks running, an interesting feat. The rock vets are booked solid through August, so lots of opportunity to catch them as the make the North American rounds.

The College World Series falls three spots to #6. The CWS will wrap up early next week, depending on how the games shake out. The double elimination system makes for pretty interesting brackets. Jason Aldean hangs onto the #7 spot and the Heat fall to #8. The Heat did manage to capture the title, ending the series in a dominant 4-1 performance.

Katy Perry returns to the countdown after missing a week, though she has not released any new concert dates. I remain convinced the interest it due to her upcoming theatrical release Katy Perry: Part of Me, in 3D, no less. Again, not selling tickets to that, but I’m not adverse to having to look up Katy Perry each week to find out what she’s up to.

Stunning reversal in the battle for tween pop supremacy. Beliebers are retreating on all fronts under a reinvigorated push by the five boy British Invasion that is One Direction. Results were close once more this week, but when the dust cleared, One Direction returned to the top. I figured with the sound victory last week, the esteemed Mr. Bieber would be on top for the foreseeable future.

Then again, I reason I’m not the best person to forecast trends in tween pop.

One of two championships on the countdown this week, the College World Series, enters the countdown at #3. Game 1 starts today at the shiny, almost new TD Ameritrade Park. This is year two at this park, after Rosenblatt Stadium passed the torch. Winner of the past 2 CWS, South Carolina, is once again in the running this year. The Stony Brook Seawolves are playing the Cinderella card this year, having defeated powerhouse LSU in the regionals to advance to the CWS, a first for an America East Conference team.

The NBA Finals settle into the center of the countdown. The Heat have a slight edge here, but only just tied up the series. This is the Heat’s second trip to the Finals with LeBron, where they’ve been defeated once. There’s at least three more games to go before LeBron will know if he’s got something fill that empty spot on his mantle place.

The US Grand Prix makes its inaugural appearance on the countdown. The latest, greatest incarnation of this F1 racing event will be in our backyard, at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin. The Formula One Expo is going on in Austin this weekend, where TicketCity will have some folks who can answer your questions in person. Or you can look at the really cool cars, either way. The Expo will certainly wet your appetite for the race, which isn’t until November, ample time to get your tickets to this bit of racing history.

Well, now it’s a fight. When last we left this little pop soap opera, the esteemed Mr. Bieber had been trailing One Direction for weeks. The Bieber partisans had put up impressive numbers considering he hadn’t actually released any tour dates. Now the Believe Tour is on the books for this Fall, and interest skyrocketed. Just not quite enough to dethrone the boys of One Direction this week. Mind, the gap between #1 and #2 has changed from “brutal trouncing” to single digits.

Despite not announcing headlining performances from either Justin Bieber or One Direction, the ACL Festival secures #3. That rather wide gap now separates it from second place, though. Fans will simply have to “make do” with the likes of Florence + The Machine, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Neil Young, The Black Keys, Jack White and many others.

The Euro Cup, 2012 edition, lands in #4. Outside of the World Cup, this is one of international soccer’s biggest events. Hosted this year in Poland and Ukraine, 16 of the top European teams will compete, including Spain, who won the last Euro Cup and the last World Cup.

At #5 and #7, Spurs and Heat remind us the NBA finals are still in progress. These two are the favorites to meet in the Finals, though Boston and OKC still have a say in the matter.

Rounding things out in the bottom five we see the return of Jimmy Buffet and Jason Aldean this week. Buffet is on tour right now, and Aldean is part of the big Country Megaticket shows this summer with Luke Bryan.

Finally there’s a greater than usual interest in this year’s Belmont Stakes as enthusiasts buzz about the possibility of new Triple Crown winner. I’ll Have Another has won both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes, and is set to race at Belmont. There hasn’t been a Triple Crown winner since Affirmed captured it in 1978. If I’ll Have Another wins, it may be a once-in-a-lifetime experience for the lucky spectators.

10 - Bruce Springsteen

My cunning plan to miss a weekly update a hope this One Direction thing died down a bit has failed. For the record, they won last week too. Hopefully that’s the biggest surprise you experience this week. The Derby peaked at #2, as the festivities are under way today with the Oaks and the big race itself is tomorrow. TicketCity has a team in Louisville so all you very, very last minute shoppers still have a chance to get in on the most exciting two minutes in sports.

The Rangers leapt up the list, ending up at #4 and providing the only other sports event this week.

For all practical purposes we’re in the big summer concert season already. While the box office is pleased with the boy band from England, there’s big tours roaming all over. Roger Waters “Wall Live Tour” passed through Austin, boosting him to #5 this week.

The bottom five is all new, all concerts, kicking off with Tom Petty, who is drifting through Austin tomorrow night. Coldplay, Dave Matthews Band, and Drake are also Texas bound but you’ve got some time to get your tickets for all those shows in Dallas and Houston.

Protip: the kids like the One Direction. They also like the Justin Bieber, just not quite as many of them at this point, it would seem. Mr. Bieber still has no concerts scheduled, while One Direction recently announced the follow-up to the tour they haven’t finished yet. The “2013 World Tour” will kick off less than 3 months after the “Up All Night Tour” ends in December of 2012.

The Derby and Oaks hang onto the #3 spot, keeping the top of the countdown the same this week. Things get mixed up pretty quickly after that. Garth Brooks returns as interest in his headlining gig at the Calgary Stampede lands him in the #4 spot. Jimmy Buffet is swinging by ACL Live at the Moody Theatre next month, and that’s probably why he appeared at #5 this week.

The bottom five reminds us that the NFL has returned at a slightly more normal time this season. You may recall last year the season almost didn’t happen, but this year the schedules have been posted and you can stock up on your favorite NFL team’s tickets a solid 4 months in advance of the preseason. The boys of summer aren’t left out either, as the Rangers hold steady at #8 and the Yankees peak in at #10 this week.
