Protip: the kids like the One Direction. They also like the Justin Bieber, just not quite as many of them at this point, it would seem. Mr. Bieber still has no concerts scheduled, while One Direction recently announced the follow-up to the tour they haven’t finished yet. The “2013 World Tour” will kick off less than 3 months after the “Up All Night Tour” ends in December of 2012.

The Derby and Oaks hang onto the #3 spot, keeping the top of the countdown the same this week. Things get mixed up pretty quickly after that. Garth Brooks returns as interest in his headlining gig at the Calgary Stampede lands him in the #4 spot. Jimmy Buffet is swinging by ACL Live at the Moody Theatre next month, and that’s probably why he appeared at #5 this week.

The bottom five reminds us that the NFL has returned at a slightly more normal time this season. You may recall last year the season almost didn’t happen, but this year the schedules have been posted and you can stock up on your favorite NFL team’s tickets a solid 4 months in advance of the preseason. The boys of summer aren’t left out either, as the Rangers hold steady at #8 and the Yankees peak in at #10 this week.

10 - Kevin Hart

Not only did One Direction win again this week, but with the largest margin yet. They are posting numbers I rarely recall seeing before, digits that outstrip some of the biggest sporting events of the year, including one on this very list. Perhaps feeling the heat, fans of the esteemed Mr. Bieber have stepped things up, pushing him to the (still really distant) #2 spot. Credit where due, Bieber hit the second spot without any tour dates.

That sporting event alluded to earlier is the Kentucky Derby, and its little sister, the Kentucky Oaks. Together they posted #3 this week. There’s still a few weeks to get your plans set for a visit to Louisville and Churchill Downs. Two minutes of your trip are covered, the rest you can fill with the amazing sights, sounds and spectacle of Derby day.

Rangers fans are ready for the home opener, pushing them up a notch to #4, and relative countdown newcomer Beyoncé Knowles arrives in the #5 spot. Beyoncé’s return to live shows is set for the end of May in a three night stand at the brand new Revel Atlantic City casino. This promises to be a hot ticket despite the lack of English teenagers.

Springsteen stays put and once again kicks off the bottom half of the countdown, where Drake lands after dropping a few spots. Jimmy Buffet has been absent for a while, but with a new tour returns to the countdown this week. Finally, Kevin Hart takes over the comedy spot this week for Daniel Tosh who dropped off the list.

10 - Aerosmith

If this One Direction streak continues, I will rapidly run out of puns for the title of this update. Continue it does, with another strong #1 placement by the latest set of lads from the UK to have enthralled audiences stateside. The Kid’s Choice Awards #2 spot on the countdown is all the more impressive as it represents the short rush between last week’s update and the actual award show taking place the next day.

#3 goes to Kids Choice Award selection for Favorite Male Singer, who, no doubt, narrowly edged out Toby Keith for the prize. Mr. Beiber also won for Biggest Slime of the Night.

Rounding out the top five we have the Rangers. MLB Opening Day is on the books, but the Rangers home opener is tonight in Arlington.

Springsteen leads off the bottom five, with a boost from last week’s #8 spot. The Derby holds steady at #7 while the Masters climbs a couple spots as well. Still have time to get down to Augusta for the championship rounds this weekend.

Finally, Tosh pops back into the countdown, and Aerosmith’s “Global Warming Tour” with Cheap Trick brings us to a close.

9 - Sony Ericsson Open
10 10 Masters Tournament

One Direction brutally crushed the competition again this week, in manner that does not befit a clean cut, non-threatening boy band. The Kid’s Choice Awards, most likely on the strength of a performance by that same boy band, arrives in second, and the biggest event in college basketball comes in third. The entire top five features the same events as last week, with just a couple swaps in position.

The bottom five isn’t much different either. Spring is in the air, and baseball follows soon after. Last season’s AL Champs, the Texas Rangers, start things off. Fans are ready for another shot at a World Series win this season.

Big spring events crowd the bottom five, with the Derby and Masters joined by the Sony Ericsson Open. Colloquially known as the Miami Open or Miami Masters, this tournament isn’t a Grand Slam, but it’s close. It is one of a small number of tournaments on the ATP tour with a draw larger than 64 players, other than the four Grand Slams. It’s a great way for value-minded tennis fans to see a big tournament without paying Grand Slam premium prices (or flying around the world).

9 8 Mississippi State Football
10 7 WWE

Interesting week, as nearly everyone on the countdown is a holdover from last week. Rare to see such a low level of “churn.” While Taylor Swift’s return to the top spot may seem surprising, it’s mostly the result of the World Series moving back to St. Louis. Fewer fans in Texas are going to make that particular commute.

The Series’ drop let the Longhorns move back to the #2 spot, and let the Breeders’ Cup make a big jump to the #3 spot. The Breeders’ Cup is a week away, still time to get your tickets and make some travel plans for Louisville.

The bottom five is pretty similar this week. The Cowboys drop a spot, and the Yellow Jackets, who had been absent after a good run, return this week as the countdown’s only “new” face. Mississippi State has hung in there for a while now, and keeps going this week. Rounding things out is the WWE, who benefited from some last minute searches last Monday.
