The 2008 US Open golf tournament is only week away, so next week the best golfers in the world will tee it up at Torrey Pines. Practice rounds for the ’08 Open are Monday through Wednesday and the regular tournament days are Thursday through Sunday. The gates are open from 6am to 7pm on practice round days, and players usually hit the course between 7am and Noon. On tournament days play will begin at 7am from both the 1st and 10th tees and will last until almost 7pm, the final pairing each day should tee off at 2:42pm.
Torrey Pines is a public golf course located in La Jolla, California which is just 25 minutes north of San Diego. Torrey Pines has two courses, a North & South course. The South Course is where the US Open will be played, it is a par 72 course which plays close to 7,600 yards from the Championship tees. The favorite at the 2008 US Open has to be Tiger Woods who has won on the Torrey Pines course 6 times before, he won the Buick Invitational in 1999, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007 & 2008. But the ’08 Open will be Tiger’s first tournament since his recent knee surgery so many experts are unsure how he’ll performer. The other favorite at Torrey Pines will be local hero Phil Mickelson, who grew up in San Diego and has played the Torrey Pines course all his life. Mickelson has also had previous success at Torrey Pines with Buick wins in 1993, 2000 and 2001. The field will be loaded for the 2008 US Open, so it should a very exciting event.
The 2008 US Open golf tournament is the first major being hosted at Torrey Pines, so it is a fantastic opportunity for people in Southern California to be a part of major tournament golf.
