2014 Big 12 Basketball Preview


The Big 12 Conference boasts some of the best basketball talent this season. Currently, five of the ten teams in the league are ranked in the top-25 of the Associated Press Poll, including two top ten teams. And that doesn’t even include the TCU Horned Frogs who have started the season at 9-0, as well as the Baylor Bears who have gotten out to an 8-1 start.
Below is a breakdown of the top five teams in the Big 12, currently, based on their national ranking. Also provided is ticket data information for each squad:

Texas Longhorns – 8th

The Longhorns are ranked 8th in the country currently, having just come off a disappoint loss to at the Kentucky Wildcats 63-51. Prior to that, they beat defending champion UConn on the road 55-4 in their most impressive victory of the season. They don’t have any more major non-conference opponents on the schedule, but they’ll have a big conference battle early in the New Year when they host Oklahoma on January 5th. The average price for Texas vs. Oklahoma basketball tickets is just $79 for the game at the Frank Erwin Center.

Kansas Jayhawks – 10th

Muck like Texas, the Jayhawks met Kentucky early in the season, falling 72-40 in just their second game of the year. It was an embarrassing loss so early in the year, but they’ve gone on to beat Michigan State 61-56, as well as Florida 71-65 to pick up two big non-conference wins. They’ll get another opportunity when they host the thirteenth-ranked Utah Utes at the Sprint Center. Kansas Jayhawks basketball tickets have an average price of $84 for the game and a get-in price of just $32.

Iowa State – 14th

The Cyclones are ranked 14th in the country with their lone blemish on the year a loss to 19th-ranked Maryland at the Sprint Center. Their most impressive win to date was a 95-77 win over the Arkansas Razorbacks who were ranked 18th at the time. The Cyclones will begin conference play at home against Oklahoma State, a game that has an average price of $109 for Iowa State basketball tickets.

Oklahoma – 16th

The Sooners have had a busy season to date, knocking off the UCLA Bruins 75-65 in November, but fell to the 2nd-ranked Wisconsin Badgers 69-56. The most expensive game of the season for Oklahoma Sooners basketball tickets is March 7th when they host the Jayhawks. Kansas basketball tickets for the game have an average price of $97 with a get-in price of $41.

West Virginia – 22nd

Like Texas, the West Virginia Mountaineers’ most impressive victory of the season is against the defending national champion Connecticut Huskies. They held off UConn 78-68 to win the Puerto Rico Tip-Off championship. It is the only non-conference game to date where they have faced a ranked opponent, and judging by the Huskies’ recent struggles, they may not be ranked for long.
