2014 MLS Cup Playoffs Schedule

MLSCupPlayoffs2014

The 2014 MLS Cup Playoffs are past the Knockout rounds and with the first leg of the Eastern and Western Conference Semi-finals already in the books, we have already seen some fantastic matches and unbelievable individual efforts. There are 8 teams still vying for the 4 spots in the MLS Conference Championship round.

Western Conference

Seattle Sounders FC vs. FC Dallas

The first leg of the Seattle Sounders FC vs. FC Dallas MLS Western Conference semifinal round produced one of the most unusual games of the MLS Cup Playoffs so far. The Supporters Shield winning Sounders have blazed through this season behind a daunting offensive attack led by Clint Dempsey and Obafemi Martins. FC Dallas effectively shut down Seattle’s attack in leg 1, but the game still ended in a 1-1 draw. The teams head back to Seattle to play what is now a winner take all game at CenturyLink Field.

Real Salt Lake vs. LA Galaxy

Despite the numerous offensive weapons on both Real Salt Lake and Los Angeles Galaxy, the 1st leg of this Western Conference Semifinal ended in a scoreless draw. RSL controlled the match but LA Galaxy keeper Jaime Penedo put forth one of the best performances of his career and kept Real from finding the back of the net. The series heads back to Los Angeles with both sides desperately looking for points. A rematch of one of last season’s semifinals, these teams are not strangers to playing each other in the postseason and the 2nd leg of this years’ semifinal is one of the most anticipated games of the season.

Eastern Conference

D.C. United vs. New York Red Bulls

This year has been a season of firsts for the New York Red Bulls. The Red Bulls defeated defending MLS Cup Champion Sporting Kansas City in the knockout round for their first ever playoff win at Red Bulls Arena. The Red Bulls followed that up with an improbable 2-0 thrashing of Eastern Conference #1 seed D.C. United. Heading back to RFK Stadium the United will have to have one of the most complete games of their season and will likely have to hold the Red Bulls to a shutout to have a chance of making it to another Eastern Conference Finals.

New England Revolution vs. Columbus Crew

The New England Revolution may be in the best shape to advance to the conference finals than any other team in the MLS Cup Playoffs. The Revolution went into Crew Stadium and put on an offensive clinic, defeating the Crew 4-2. Charlie Davies and Lee Nguyen combined for 3 of the 4 goals for the Revolution and simply had their way with the Crew defense. Columbus is an experience club and knows that they will have to play one of the best defensive matches of their season to hold New England from scoring at Gillette Stadium.
