Top 5 Things to do at the Austin Rodeo


The Austin Rodeo returns March 14-28, 2015. The Austin Rodeo has been around since 1938 and has been getting bigger and bigger every year. What started out as a simple stock show, has turned into a two week event that includes everything from pro rodeo riding, to concerts, livestock and anything in between.

1. Music

Austin is known as the live music capital of the world, and the Austin Rodeo pulls some of the country’s top acts. Every year the music at the Austin Rodeo gets more diverse and includes bands from multiple genres.

2. Mutton Bustin’

In probably the most adorable event that you will find at any rodeo, mutton bustin at the Austin Rodeo is a can’t miss event. If you don’t know what mutton bustin is, it is aspiring cowboys and cowgirls ridding a sheep out of a shoot. They try and ride the sheep for 6 seconds and receive a score based on their performance and on the animal. There are mutton bustin events just about every night at the Austin Rodeo, and catching at least one of them is a must.

3. Barbecue Cook-Off

Every year at the Austin Rodeo there is a giant barbecue cook-off. The cook-off is open to the public and features numerous teams, companies, and vendors competing in several different contests to try and produce the best barbecue possible. There are giant tents, outdoor smokers, tons of food, and lots to do. The cook-off is a charity event and raises scholarship funds for the youth of Texas. The cook-off has been getting bigger and bigger every year and there are usually more than 40 different tents with amazing barbecue to try.

The 2015 Austin Rodeo Barbecue cook-off will open to the public March 19th, 2015.

4. Stock Show

The Austin Rodeo has one of the top stock shows in all of Texas. Exhibitors from around the country travel to Austin to show off their prize animals. Over the 2 weeks of the Austin Rodeo, there are more than a dozen different livestock shows. Admission to the Fairgrounds will get you into the livestock shows and attending is a must. The livestock shows are great for kids and you will see some of the top prized animals in the country.

5. Bull Riding

It may go without saying, but if you are attending the Austin Rodeo, you can’t miss the bull riding. The Austin Rodeo is one of the top professional rodeos in the nation and you will have the chance to witness the best in the business riding some fierce animals. With bull riding going on throughout the two weeks of the Austin Rodeo, you have plenty of chances to catch the exciting show live.
