A Cowboys vs. Patriots Super Bowl Could be the Most Expensive Ticket Ever

Tom Brady Super Bowl LI

With the opening weekend of the NFL playoffs behind us, we are one week closer to Super Bowl LI. As fans of the remaining 8 playoff teams dream of hoisting the Lombardi Trophy, they may also wonder how much it would cost them to make the pilgrimage to NRG Stadium to see the Super Bowl. Super Bowl tickets are always one of the most expensive tickets of the year, but in 2017, two teams could drive Super Bowl tickets to unprecedented heights. While forecasting Super Bowl ticket prices is difficult, if the top seeded Dallas Cowboys and New England Patriots both reach the Super Bowl, it could be one of the most expensive tickets in the history of sports.

Heres why:

Demand Demand Demand:

Looking at the average ticket prices of the 8 NFL teams that hosted, or will host a home game in the Wild Card, or Divisional playoff round, prices for the Cowboys and Patriots dwarf the rest of the NFL. The average price of the other 6 NFL teams comes in at $191, while the Patriots are just shy of double that figure at $365, and the Cowboys are well over double at $411. When comparing Cowboys and Patriots prices only to the other Divisional home teams, this disparity is even more pronounced, with the Chiefs and Falcons averaging $174 a ticket, or 58% less expensive than a ticket to see the Cowboys. The Cowboys and Patriots are clearly the most expensive playoff tickets in the NFL, and if these prices are any indication of potential Super Bowl ticket demand, a Cowboys vs. Patriots Super Bowl would easily be bigger than any other Super Bowl Matchup.

TLDR: Ticket demand for both the Cowboys and Patriots is approximately double the rest of the NFL.

The Patriots Precedent:

superbowlprices2013-2016

The last time Tom Brady and the Patriots reached the Super Bowl, prices did anything but deflate. After rising a meager $12 from 2013 to 2014, average Super Bowl ticket prices jumped $1,861 in 2015 to $4,253 to see the Patriots attempt a 4th Super Bowl title of the Tom Brady-Bill Belichick era. The New England Patriots have been the NFL’s winningest franchise since claiming their first Super Bowl in 2001, and are one of the most polarizing franchises in the NFL. The opportunity to see Tom Brady face off against America’s Team, in the Super Bowl, with a chance for a record 5th Super Bowl title, should only exaggerate the trend we saw in 2015.

TLDR: Patriots have a history of driving Super Bowl ticket prices higher.

The Power of the Star:

The last time the Dallas Cowboys played in the Super Bowl, cell phones had extendable antennas, and Nick Saban had just finished his first year as head coach at Michigan State. Needless to say, the anticipation of another Cowboys Super Bowl appearance is the highest it has ever been. The Cowboys had the highest average ticket price of any team in the 2016 regular season, as well as the highest average attendance at 92,539 per home game. There are lots of Cowboys fans, and they are willing to spend money to see their team play. Throw in the fact that the Super Bowl is at NRG Stadium in Houston, only approximately 264 miles from their home stadium in Arlington, and traveling to the Super Bowl will be more accessible to Cowboys fans than any other team except the Houston Texans. Excited fans, with low travel expenses should mean high ticket demand and prices. A Cowboys Super Bowl win would tie them with the Pittsburgh Steelers for the most all-time at 6.

TLDR: The Cowboys have lots of fans, money, excitement, and are within driving distance of Super Bowl LI.

Super Bowl LI Price Predictions

As of 1/9/2017, average ticket price for all Super Bowl LI tickets sold to date is already over $4,800, approximately $500 more than last years record numbers. If the two highest demand teams both reach the Super Bowl, with history on the line for both teams, these prices can be expected to skyrocket and could potentially reach higher than $7,000 a ticket.
