2020 MLB Spring Training Preview

Baseball is back! Spring Training has officially kicked off for the 2020 MLB season and all MLB teams have reported to their training camps. The first official 2020 Spring Training games start on Friday, Feb 21. Each MLB team will play approximately 33 official Spring Training games, with some teams playing extra exhibition games before MLB Opening Day on March 26, 2020.

2020 MLB Season Preview

The Washington Nationals enter the 2020 MLB season as defending World Series Champions. Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Dodgers are once again making it known that they will be World Series contenders as they recently acquired former Red Sox superstars Mookie Betts and David Price, but they’ll have strong competition in their division as the Padres continue to strengthen their core lineup. Other National League teams to watch this season include the Atlanta Braves, who fell to the St. Louis Cardinals in the 2019 National League Division Series, and the Philadelphia Phillies. A sleeper team to watch will be the Cincinnati Reds, as they had the most free-agent acquisitions during the offseason and will look to take advantage of the weakened Milwaukee Brewers and Chicago Cubs to dethrone the Cardinals as reigning NL Central champions.

On the American League side – you can expect the Yankees to once again be apart of the postseason race after they signed the biggest free agent of the offseason, Gerrit Cole. Meanwhile, on the West Coast, it looks like things are finally becoming serious for the Angels as they added Anthony Rendon to their star-studded lineup. Don’t be surprised to catch the Oakland Athletics and/or Minnesota Twins back in the postseason this year either.

The MLB Spring Training Experience

Spring Training is more than just warmup games for major league teams – it’s a chance to see the future stars of MLB – minor league players get the chance to play along with the major league players. One of the most exciting parts about Spring Training is watching prospects rise above the rest to earn their place on the MLB roster for Opening Day.

Spring Training games are much different than regular season MLB games. All Spring Training games take place in stadiums much smaller than any major league parks. This allows fans to see the players up close and personal. Players are also known to sign autographs and actively engage with the fans before and after the games.

Cactus and Grapefruit Leagues

MLB Spring Training is divided into two leagues – the Cactus and the Grapefruit leagues. The Cactus League is based in Arizona, with all teams based in the greater Phoenix area. Meanwhile, the Grapefruit league is based in Florida, with the teams being spread out among both the west and east coasts of the Florida peninsula.
