Best new Broadway Show in 2008

Every year there is a hot, new Broadway show that everyone says will be “the best show on Broadway’, but many of those don’t turn out as big as they were predicted.  In 2008 there is finally a new show that should break that mold and become one of the biggest shows on Broadway.  In November 2008, Shrek The Musical comes to New York City to play Broadway.

Shrek The Musical is a theatre production that is adapted from the hit Dreamworks movie about an Ogre, Shrek, that is looking for love.  Shrek the movie chronicles the adventures of Shrek and his faithful Donkey as Shrek tries to win the love of Princess Fiona, and defend her from the evil Lord Farquaad.  The musical version of this hit comedy promises to be full of entertaining song and dance that will have Broadway crowds buzzing.

Shrek The Musical will open with a limited run at the 5th Avenue Theatre in Seattle, Washington in August 2008.  After that it heads The Broadway Theatrein New York City to begin its tour as a Broadway show.  The Broadway Theatre is a legendary venue for Broadway theatre that was recently the home to Oprah’s The Color Purple.  The Color Purple will end its run at The Broadway Theatre at the end of this month (June 2008).  Shrek The Musical will start at The Broadway Theatre in November 2008.  November 8th will begin the “previews” on Broadway, and the official opening is Sunday, December 14th.

The two reasons why Shrek will be a smash hit on Broadway are the shows ability to appeal to both kids & adults, just like the movie, and the strong cast that assembled.  The movie Shrek was hugely popular with children, but it also included plenty of humor that was geared towards adults.  It was one of the first animated movies to bridge that gap between “Children’s movie” and a regular, feature movie.  Entertainment fans of all ages will be able to enjoy Shrek The Musical because they already know the show will have something to appeal to them.

The other reason Shrek The Musical will “kill” on Broadway is the strong cast.  The main characters will be staffed by former Tony Award winners or nominees.  Brian d’Arcy James (a Tony Award nominee) plays Shrek and Sutton Foster (winner) plays Princess Fiona.  The rest of cast has experience in some of Broadway’s biggest productions, including: The Lion King, Rent, Wicked, The Producers, Chicago and Beauty and the Beast.

So get to ‘the Big Apple’ to see the hottest show in Broadway, Shrek The Musical is undoubtedly going to be the next big thing in theatre.
