Where to Park at the Kentucky Derby


The Kentucky Derby is the longest running annual sporting event in the world, and it truly is an experience unlike any other. The pageantry, the hospitality, the mint juleps, getting a chance to experience all that the Kentucky Derby has to offer is one of the top experiences in sports. If you are lucky enough to be attending the 141st Run for the Roses, here are a few tips for parking at Churchill Downs.

Parking Availability

One thing that all fans looking to park at the Kentucky Derby should know, is that all of the official Churchill Downs parking lots are reserved for parking pass holders, and all parking is sold in advance. This means purchasing a parking pass is a must for fans looking to park onsite at ther 2015 Kentucky Derby.

Most Convenient Parking

The most convenient parking is going to be one of the reserved parking lots that require a parking pass. But even among these lots, there are some that offer more convenience. Choosing a parking lot on the North West of Churchill Downs will give you easier access to the grandstands, hospitality clubs, and amenities.

Off Site Parking Options

For fans looking to find parking the day of the Kentucky Derby, there is public parking available at Cardinal Stadium on the campus of the University of Louisville. Parking lots at Cardinal Stadium will open up at 7:00 AM on the day of the Derby and will be available all day. It should be noted that fans will be expected to remove their vehicles after the Derby, as there is no overnight parking available at Cardinal Stadium. The cost for parking at Cardinal Stadium is $20 a day for cars, $100 for RVs, and $175 for Buses. All parking at Cardinal Stadium is first come first serve. The walk to Churchill Downs is a little under a mile, or there are shuttles to the Derby available for $15.

Drop Off Locations

If you don’t have a parking pass, and you would rather save a few dollars, there are other ways to get to Churchill downs on the day of the Derby. Located to the Northeast of Churchill Downs is what is known as the “Taxi Depot” and is an area reserved for drop off and pick up of patrons attending the Kentucky Derby. The Taxi Depot is located in between Third and Fourth Streets, on the south side of Central Avenue. The walk from the Taxi Depot to Churchill Downs is only about 4 or 5 minutes and is a perfect way to skip driving and parking all together.
