Pete Rose bet on his team ‘every night’

The big story in Major League Baseball this year broke yesterday, when Pete Rose admitted on the Dan Patrick radio show that he bet on the team he was managing, the Cincinnati Reds, “every night”. Rose was doing an interview with Patrick and Keith Olbermann to discuss the new Pete Rose exhibit that will be on display during Reds games at Great American Ballpark in Cincy.

In response to a question by Olbermann, Rose said, “I bet on my team every night. I didn’t bet on my team four nights a week. I was wrong. I bet on my team to win every night because I love my team, I believe in my team, I did everything in my power every night to win that game.”

This complete acknowledgement by Rose was the first time he admitted that he always bet on the team he was managing. Prior to this interview, he’d only expressed that he bet on some of his team’s games.

In 1989, Rose was given a lifetime ban from the sport for betting on baseball. But for the next 15 years he denied he ever did it. Until 2004 when he published his autobiography, that finally said he did in-fact bet on the sport he was managing.

Pete Rose is Major League Baseball’s all time leader in base hits. He finished his career with 4256 hits.
