On the heels of the announcement that rehearsals were underway for Spider-Man Turn off the Dark, comes the news there is now an official opening night: December 21st, 2010. This will follow a series of preview performances starting November 14th. So Broadway is in for a very superhero-y Christmas this year.

The production’s start date has been pushed back multiple times over the past couple years, with first estimates for the previous fall giving way to early this year, then, as financial problems mounted, to a big question mark. As the production is estimated to be the most expensive in the history of Broadway, the financial problems were definitely of the ‘nontrivial’ variety. Reports are it will cost around $50 million to produce by the time the curtains are drawn. Hopefully it’ll overcome the Heaven’s Gate vibe that’s starting emanate from it.

Reeve Carney, Jennifer Damiano, and Patrick Page remain the stars as Peter Parker, Mary Jane Watson, and Norman Osborn respectively. The newly renamed Foxwoods Theatre plays host to the show, formerly the Hilton Theatre, formerly The Ford Center for the Performing Arts, formerly the pile of rubble that consisted of the Apollo and Lyric Theatres.
