San Antonio Spurs 1st Round Playoff Predictions

TimDuncan

The San Antonio Spurs are about to embark on their defense of last season’s NBA Championship, and will start their playoff run against a hungry Los Angeles Clippers team. Spurs fans across the country will be watching with anticipation, and some, will get to see the action live. While every year and every playoff series is different, looking at the trends from the last few Spurs playoff runs, we have some tips for picking which game to attend in 2015

The Numbers

Based on the last five playoff runs for the San Antonio Spurs, the first round has been anything but a struggle. The Spurs have gone 18-9 in the 1st round over the last 5 years, winning 4 out of 5 of those series. In the 4 series that the Spurs have won, they went an unbelievable 16-5, sweeping two of those series. Here is a game by game breakdown of the Spurs last 5 1st round playoff series.

SpursPlayoffs

If you want to see the Spurs win

If you want to see the Spurs win in the 1st round, you might consider going to games 2 or 4. The Spurs have won game 2 and 4 80% of the time over the last 5 years and have only dropped each of those games once during that span. With the Spurs playing game 4 at home this series, that is the most likely Spurs victory based on these trends. Call it coincidence, or maybe some Gregg Popovich magic, either way the Spurs win game 2 and 4.

If you want to see the Spurs lose

Picking a 1st round game to see the San Antonio Spurs lose is a bit harder to predict, due to their dominance in the 1st round over the last 5 years. The only game that the Spurs have a losing record in is Game 6, where they have 2 losses to 1 win. Assuming the series goes to 6 games, the Spurs tend to struggle in game 6. Game 1 and Game 3 have also proved more troublesome for the Spurs, with San Antonio only posting a 6-4 record during those games. With Game 1 being played in Los Angeles, that is my prediction for the best game to catch a Clippers victory.

If you want to see the Spurs win on the Road

If you are a Spurs fan living in Los Angeles, or are looking to travel to LA to catch the Spurs at the Staples Center, you might want to consider going to Game 2. The Clippers will have home court advantage, playing games 1, 2 and possible 5, 7 at home. As I noted earlier, the Spurs have dominated Game 2, at both home and on the road during the last 5 years, and picking Game 2 might give you the best chance to catch a Spurs victory in LA.

Spurs vs. Clippers 2015 Record

The Spurs and Clippers met on the court 4 times in the 2014-15 season. Both teams won two games, each winning one at home, and one on the road. While the Spurs have been playing their best basketball down the stretch, just looking at the recent history between these teams indicates that this should be a great series. Will the Spurs continue to dominate the 1st round? Or will the Clippers help end the Spurs season with disappointment? Let me know your predictions.
