This 2018 Broadway season has seen a host of new shows set to make their mark on “The Great White Way”.
Mean Girls & Frozen have managed to make a successful transition from the big screen to stage, while Harry Potter has dominated sales to no one’s surprise, and even Spongebob Squarepants was nominated for 12 Tony Awards. There are still the usual standards, both old and new; Wicked, The Lion King, The Book of Mormon and some show called “Hamilton”, which I can only presume focuses on the exciting topic of banking and finance in the late 1700’s is a must see!
The second half of the year has something for everyone, but here are my top 4 new shows to look out for in 2018.
- KING KONG – Yes! THAT King Kong is coming to Broadway. King Kong made its stage debut in Australia back in 2013, and Australian theatre fans went crazy for this movie icon. Now Kong is heading home to New York, and will feature a 1 ton, 20 ft tall animatronic giant as he smashes his way from an uncharted island to the streets on New York City. The music will reflect the 1930’s NYC vibe, but recent updates have been made to include more contemporary original songs. Previews begin October 5th at the Broadway Theatre, opening on November 8th. - PRETTY WOMAN – Keeping with the theme of screen to stage, Pretty Woman is based on the classic film of the same name. Pretty Woman made its premiere earlier this year in Chicago and opened to rave reviews, and the musical score will have the feel of late 80’s – early 90’s rock. Music by Bryan Adams (AKA the guy that sings all those great songs) sets the tone for one of the all-time romantic comedy favorites. Previews begin July 20th at the Nederlander Theatre, opening on August 16th. Buy Pretty Woman Tickets here.
- TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD – Harper Lee’s classic novel is finally being brought to the stage, and will star Jeff Daniels as Atticus Finch with a script adapted by Aaron Sorkin. Mockingbird will also feature a new twist to the beloved classic and will be told as a memory play, allowing for some of the performers to portray older representations of their characters. This is easily my pick for the Tony Award’s Best Play. Previews begin November 1st at the Shubert Theatre, opening on December 13th. Buy To Kill a Mockingbird Tickets here.
- THE CHER SHOW – This musical covers six decades of stardom and 35 smash hits from the career of this music icon. Three actresses will cover the life of Cher, from the kid starting out, to the glam pop star, and finally the icon. Get ready for great music and some serious over the top costumes. The Cher Show opened in Chicago this June and will make its way to Broadway with previews beginning November 1st at the Neil Simon Theatre, opening on December 3rd. Buy The Cher Show Tickets here.
Well there you have it, these are the 4 MUST SEE shows to look forward to in 2018.
