Which team will win the 2008 Final Four?

A lot of success in the NCAA Tournament depends on where a team gets seeded. It’s a huge advantage to be a #1 or #2, as opposed to a #3 seed. #3 seeds actually have a losing record (historically) in the 3rd round (Sweet 16) of the NCAA Tournamenty. It’s also helpful for a team to play their games close to home. The less travel a team has to do, and the larger the crowds are supporting them helps teams a lot.

But since we will not know the NCAA Tournament seedings until Sunday, March 16th. Let’s instead just look at the top teams in college basketball based on their performance this season:

* Tennessee Volunteers
Pros: Chris Lofton is one of best 3-point shooters in college basketball. They are an aggressive team. They’ve played a tough schedule.
Cons: They lack a superior PG. And their experience in the NCAA Tourney isn’t strong compared to the field.

* Memphis Tigers
Pros: Have one of the best PG in college basketball (D. Rose). Very athletic team. Have a coach who has been to the tourney many times.
Cons: Horrible, horrible, horrible free throw shooting.

* North Carolina Tarheels
Pros: Roy Williams has won it before. They have terrific inside players. Lots of athletes.
Cons: They’ve struggled on defense at points this year. Particularly against Duke who beat them recently.

* UCLA Bruins
Pros: Loads of Final Four experience on their roster. Great guard play, and dominant inside players (Kevin Love). Florida Gators might not make the tournament.
Cons: Florida Gators might make the tournament.

* Texas Longhorns
Pros: Best PG in America, DJ Augustin. Great outside shooter (AJ Abrams). Loads of bodies upfront.
Cons: Have been very streaky shooters this year, and the team struggles when they are missing. Late game free throws have been ugly over past month.

* Kansas Jayhawks
Pros: Tons of big, athletic stars across their roster. Rush, Chalmers & Arthur are big-time players who will be cashing checks in the NBA soon.
Cons: Bill Self has had difficulties getting the Jayhawks through the early rounds of the tourney.

After these top 6 teams, there are also a few other strong teams that might be contenders for the Men’s College Basketball National Championship. Keep an eye on Georgetown, Duke, Stanford, Wisconsin & Louisville.

I can’t yet the team that will the Final Four in San Antonio, because the seeds haven’t been announced. But once the NCAA Tournament is seeded, I’ll make predictions on the Final 4 teams and the eventually National Champions.
