Wicked on the Big Screen

News broke last week that Wicked, currently a major success on Broadway, will be heading to the big screen. Hollywood has fairy tale fever after the big money pulled in by Alice in Wonderland earlier this year. Currently involved in the film production are the musical’s book writer Winnie Holzman and songwriter, Stephen Schwartz, along with the producer Marc Platt. They are meeting with four different candidates to helm the film as director: Rob Marshall , James Mangold, Ryan Murphy, and JJ Abrams (who has more important stuff to do, so please, leave him alone.). Universal is backing the production.

Based on the book Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire, the story is a revisionist prequel of sorts to the story of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. The story expands and elaborates on the backstory of Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, and her relationship with Glinda, the Good Witch of the South (or North, depending on your preferred “source” material). The musical based on the book has been a mainstay on Broadway since it opened in 2004. The Broadway production is routinely a top grosser and has spawned multiple touring companies.

Extremely early in the process to have any release date set. Unless it’s a complete disaster, the film will only feed interest in the live productions. While it’s doubtful we’ll be selling tickets to the movie, we have a large selection of tickets to both the Broadway show and the touring productions that currently crisscross the country. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to complain about all the stuff they changed in the movie version by seeing the musical first. Get yours here: Wicked Tickets
